Staurolite crystals are a dark brown sometimes black mineral which are well known for forming in pairs as cross shapes, this form is known as cruciform penetration twinning. However, these particular specimens from France are of the single crystals only and due to their monoclining crystal habit and long shape are called staurolite coffins. the name is derived from the Greek words ‘stauros’ meaning cross and ‘lithos’ meaning stone. They form in regional metamorphic zones and can be found alongside garnets, micas and kyanites. The samples are only small in size, between 1 to 3 cm in length and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
