Tufa thin section slide. Tufa is a variety of limestone, formed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals from ambient temperature water bodies. This particular material is from the Flandrian epoch of the Quaternary Period and it was collected in Caerwys, North Wales. It forms in both fluvial and lacustrine environments but also subterranian passages ( dripstone, stalagmites & stalactites ). Geothermally heated hot springs sometimes produce similar (but less porous) carbonate deposits known as travertine. Tufas are commonly characterised by their macrobiological component however in our specimens there are no signs of biological remains. The thin section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.
