Honey calcite mineral specimens from Mexico which exhibit a yellow to orange colouration due to impurities of iron from the mineral hematite. The specimens are crystalline in nature and can exhibit a rough rhombic form as expected of calcites. They are translucent, letting some but not all light through, which gives them an eye catching ‘glow’. The samples are ideal for enthusiasts, hobbyists and collectors and are available in various sizes. This honey calcite is available by weight, starting from 500 grams, and is suitable for lapidary, educational and enthusiasts use. The pieces vary from 20 mm to 100 mm, though most pieces will sit in-between and come supplied in a polythene bag with a label.

The mineral, Honey (or citrin) calcite is a variation of calcite which appears to exhibit a translucent orange colouration and crystalline habit. Calcite itself is a fairly soft mineral, coming in at 3 on the Mohs scale of hardness and can be scratched by ones finger nail. As with other minerals in this group, it reacts with hydrochloric acid, which when exposed to, will cause a fizzing reaction in which carbon dioxide (CO2) is produced. This can be viewed by using vinegar but on a weaker scale. This is an excellent method for students and geologists to determine if a mineral is calcite or not. As stated, these particular samples are an orange/yellow coloured variation, this colour is caused by impurities within the calcite of the iron mineral, hematite. Hematite, when pure, is often a rich red or burgundy colour. The small amount of impurity within the calcite causes the colour difference and has led to honey calcite being quite sought after by gemstone and mineral enthusiasts due to its unique, yet calming colours. These particular samples are from Mexico and are available in various weights, starting from 500 grams, and is suitable for lapidary, educational and enthusiasts use. The pieces vary from 20 mm to 100 mm though most pieces will sit in-between and come supplied in a polythene bag with a label.
