These charts allow for geologists and archaeologists to communicate colour more effectively, by cross-referencing ISCC-NBS (Inter-Society Color Council-National Bureau of Standards) colour names with Munsell's unique alphanumeric system of colours. Every card is waterproof and washable, meaning they can handle the variable and often unfavorable weather conditions that comes with working outdoors.

Each chart contains 115 standard colour chips for the objective classification and description of rock and mineral specimens. These are: 5R, 10R, 5YR, 10YR, 5Y, 10Y, 5GY, 10GY, 5G, 10G, 5BG, 5B, 5PB, 5P, 5RP, 5YR, 5Y, 5GY, 5G, 5B + nine neutral grey tones.
