Cylindroteuthis puzosiana are an extinct species of belemnite which lived during the Oxfordian stage of the Jurassic period, dating them between 163 to 157 million years old. They belonged to the cephalopod order, and essentially resembled today’s modern squids, they possessed a soft body with tentacles and large eyes, as they likely hunted during the night. The only hard part inside a belemnite is the rostrum, a small shell like structure which was usually towards the back of the animal and pointed backwards also, this separate them from modern day squids. Cylindroteuthis puzosiana were specific species of belemnite, remains have been found around Europe, parts of Australia, Antarctica and even Greenland. They have a black conical shape and are usually 10 to 80 mm in size, though larger ones can be found. These particular samples come from Peterborough, Northamptonshire in the UK and are matrix free, they are roughly 60 to 70 mm in length with diameter varying. Each shell will come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
