A display specimen of banded galena and calcite from Derbyshire, UK. Galena is the primary ore of lead, and as such, has had a large impact historically on human history. In general, galena is a bright blue mineral and has a metallic (shiny) lustre and is often reflective, but can dull over time with exposure. It normally forms with a cubic crystal system and as such, when large chunks are broken it will often break into cubes. This particular piece shows excellent banding of galena and pale white calcite, it weighs roughly 2.025 kg and measures approximately 14.5 x 8 x 9.5 cm at its widest points. This specimen is a must have for mineral collectors, particularly those interested in British material. The sample is supplied with an information label.
