Eopecten inequivalvis is an extinct species of bivalve belonging to the pecten group, they are well known and resemble modern day pectens. They have a symmetrical shell which is fairly flat when compared to other bivalves and has numerous ribs along its surface. The shells of these (as well as brachiopods) are composed of calcium carbonate, they are separate and join only at the hinge by connective tissues, it is also very likely inferred from the streamlined shell that this species also actively swam in search of food or to escape predators. Anchoring them selves only when safe. These fossil specimens were found in Blockley Quarry, Moreton, Gloucestershire in the UK and are excellent quality sample, they are mostly free of matrix, allowing you to observe them very well, making them particularly ideal for educational use as well as collectors. Dated to the Jurassic period, they are from the Ibex zone, living between 200 to 145 million years ago. Our samples vary between 50 to 60 mm in size and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
