Rock gypsum thin section slide exhibiting a range of textbook gypsum petrographic features. This mineral is colourless in thin section, crystals are generally prismatic or tabular but some fibrous and acicular forms can be identified as seen in the example pictures. Typically gypsum is an evaporite deposit forming in lake & sea water but also from hot springs associated with volcanic activity. This particular material originates from Triassic deposits in Nottinghamshire, U.K. The slides are 30 microns thick and measure 46 x 27 mm in size and have a cover slip of the section along with a protective cardboard sleeve.

Gypsum is composed of calcium sulphate dihydrate CaSO4·2H2O . the name is derived from the Greek “Gypsos” meaning “chalk or plaster” It forms as an evaporite deposit associated with sedimentary rocks. Gypsum is deposited from lake & sea water but also from hot springs associated with volcanic activity. Pure gypsum is normally white but impurities give it a variety of hues. It is mined extensively for the manufacture of plaster, plaster board, fertilizer & soil conditioner. This example is from the Triassic deposits of Nottinghamshire, U.K. Each specimen is supplied in a labelled card tray.
We also supply Rock Gypsum thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Desert rose mineral specimens composed from gypsum found in Tunisia, the samples are composed of numerous crystals which resemble ‘petals’ which are randomly orientated, thus giving them a rose flower effect. Specimens are supplied in a 1.5″ x 1.5″ card tray or as approximately 1 cm diameter pieces in 1″ magnifier boxes with an information label.
Gypsum satin spar mineral specimens from Morocco, which are a pearly white colour composed of high quality fibrous crystals which are long and orientated in the same direction giving the samples a silky lustre. These pieces are available in various optional sizes, supplied in a card tray with a label.

Torridonian sandstone thin section slide exhibiting a fine grained arenaceous nature. The Torridonian Sandstones date from the Pre-Cambrian & are amongst the oldest rocks to be found in the UK. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip.

Textbook desert sandstone microscope thin section ideal for educational use. These thin sections exhibit well rounded quartz clasts as you would expect from an aeolian transported sediment. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.

Old red sandstone microscope slide exhibiting the well sorted nature of this particular sediment. Excellent to observe the nature of the minerals and interpret the history of the rock. The glass slide is 46 x 27 mm in size, suitable for enthusiasts, educational use and more, it will come in card sleeve with a label.

Tufa thin section slide. Tufa is a variety of limestone, formed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals from ambient temperature water bodies. This particular material is from the Flandrian epoch of the Quaternary Period and it was collected in Caerwys, North Wales.

Pumice thin section slide exhibiting the highly vesicular nature of this extrusive igneous rock. Pumice lavas tend to be silicic or felsic which are highly viscous thus do not allow the gas bubbles to escape efficiently. This material was collected from the Lipari islands of Italy.

Stunning peridotite thin section exhibiting the bright and beautiful colours of olivine and pyroxene punctuated by relatively abundant plagioclase. Peridotite is a dense, coarse grained, ultramafic igneous rock consisting largely of olivine and pyroxene.

Obsidian, also known as ‘volcanic glass’ is a felsic, extrusive igneous rock. Crystal growth is minimal / absent within obsidian due to rapid solidification rates which inhibit crystal growth thus giving the rock a glassy appearance.

Hornblende Gneiss thin section slide exhibiting an abundance of the mafic mineral hornblende, accompanied by less abundant biotite mica, quartz and feldspar. This material was collected by staff from Southern Norway. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Welded tuff thin section slide exhibiting a jumbled mass of irregularly sized broken clasts held in situ by finer ash particles which have become welded together. This material was collected from Cumbria, the original rock is likely rhyolite, and indeed in hand specimen the tuff almost still looks like rhyolite and appears to show a form of banding.

Hornfels thin section microscope slide exhibiting a dark colour and a characteristic none crystalline form. Fine grains fit together like the fragments of a mosaic, this is often referred to as rough pavement or pavement structure. Larger quartz clasts are visible but these have recrystallised to form a fine, interlocking mosaic of quartz within the original grain cast.

Diorite thin section slide. Diorite is a grey to dark-grey intermediate intrusive igneous rock composed principally of plagioclase feldspar (typically andesine), biotite mica, hornblende, and/or pyroxene. This particular material was collected in Cumbria.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

These thin sections exhibit beautiful crystals of olivine, pyroxene and augite, which often shows oscillatory zonation held within a matrix of plagioclase feldspar. The slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and are useful for interpreting the crystallisation history of the rock.

Millstone grit thin section slide exhibiting the coarse and siliceous nature of this British Carboniferous coarse sandstone. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.

Big feldspar gabbro thin section exhibiting exactly what its name describes, feldspar crystals much larger than those present in the ordinary gabbro which we supply. Characteristic twinning in the plagioclase and the bright colours of the pyroxene make for an attractive thin section, perfect for educational use.

Lignite thin section slide. Lignite coal and indeed all other varieties of coal are classed as organic sedimentary rocks. It has a high carbon content 25 – 35% & a moisture content up to 66%. The high volatile component of lignite is clearly reflected in the thin section view, particularly when compared with those of higher grade coals.
