Oolitic limestone thin section slide exhibiting textbook ooid grains, some with a clear nucleus and concentric calcareous layers. These layers were formed around sand grains or shell fragments that were rolled around in lagoons or on a shallow sub tropical sea floor, gathering layers of carbonate. These microscope slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and allow for a more detailed view of the ooid grains and an opportunity to intepret the diagenetic history of the rock, perfect for educational use. This material was collected from Mid Jurassic strata in Gloucestershire. The slides are 30 microns thick and measure 46 x 27 mm in size and have a cover slip of the section along with a protective cardboard sleeve.

Specimens of Oolitic Limestone, collected from Gloucestershire in the UK. Oolitic Limestone is a carbonate rock, that consists mostly of ooliths (or ooids). These are sand-sized carbonate particles (0.25 -2.0mm) built up of concentric shells of precipitated calcium carbonate (CaCO3). These layers form around sand grains or shell fragments that roll around on a shallow sub tropical sea floor, gathering layers of carbonate. Around the Cotswold Hills, the honey coloured stone has been the favoured building material for centuries. Many local picturesque hamlets showcase this. These specimens tend to be a little more friable than the examples from Yorkshire. These specimens are Mid Jurassic in age. They are available in multiple sizes and supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Oolitic Limestone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Welded tuff thin section slide exhibiting a jumbled mass of irregularly sized broken clasts held in situ by finer ash particles which have become welded together. This material was collected from Cumbria, the original rock is likely rhyolite, and indeed in hand specimen the tuff almost still looks like rhyolite and appears to show a form of banding.

Obsidian, also known as ‘volcanic glass’ is a felsic, extrusive igneous rock. Crystal growth is minimal / absent within obsidian due to rapid solidification rates which inhibit crystal growth thus giving the rock a glassy appearance.
