Shap granite is an intrusive igneous rock which is composed of typical granitic minerals such as quartz, plagioclase feldspar, orthoclsase feldspar and mica (biotite in this case). These crystals give the rock a coarse grained texture and interlock, resulting in a crystalline appearance. A strong rock with a colourful appearance, the presence of large pink feldspar phenocrysts give the samples an eye catching appearance. One of the best known localities for this variant of granite is from Shap Fell in Cumbria, UK, where the rock is quarried extensively for its appearance, hard wearing and easy to cut and polish factors which has resulted in the rock to be very sought after for stone facings, architecture, interior and garden design and more. As stated, these samples come from Shap quarry in Cumbria and are part of an igneous pluton which formed in the area, with potassium – argon dating of the mica indicating that this rock formed approximately 397 million years ago during the early Devonian period. The pluton is part of the Northern England Devonian plutonic suite which evidence can be found within Cumbria, Northumberland and Durham. The parent unit being the Caledonian super suite, which occurred during the Caledonian orogeny. The samples are excellent for young and older or professional collectors due to the vibrant colouration, causing interest in children where as the locality and mineralogy will be of interest to older or professional collectors. They are also suitable for educational use of all levels as the the material is often referred to as ‘text book’ granite, exhibiting all the major minerals found in granitic rocks and being easily visible even without magnification as well as enabling teachers of higher level students to describe igneous bodies, chemistry and orogenic processes to their students. Obsidian is an extrusive igneous rock, these specimens exhibit a typical black colouration with conchoidal fractures, they come from South East Mexico and are excellent for educational use and collectors due to the quality. This igneous rock forms when magma extrudes onto the earths surface, chemically it is silica rich and impurities give the black colouration. It’s fine crystalline texture and fracture makes obsidian appear glassy and it breaks as such. The pieces are available in various sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Gabbro igneous rock specimens from Balmedie quarry, Aberdeen, Scotland which exhibit a coars grained texture from the crystals. Formed as a mafic pluton intrusion, the samples contain pyroxenes such as augite along side plagioclase feldspar, amphibole and olivine crystals. They are derived from a body known as the Belhelvie basic intrusion which the parent unit being the Caledonian Supersuite. Samples exhibit a grey colouration and density and are suitable for the more serious or professional collector or higher educational use to differentiate similar looking igneous rocks with different compositions and origins. Essexite igneous rock specimens from Lanarkshire, Scotland, UK, also known as olivine or nepheline monzogabbro is an intrusive rock with mafic chemistry, composed of nepheline and plagioclase feldspar along with olivine, magnetite minerals as well as augite phenocrysts which exhibit euhedral crystal forms. The rock has a dense weight and overall dark colouration but attractive appearance. It is locally known as Crawfordjohns and was highly sought after as a high quality material to produce curling stones. Specimens of Aeolian Sandstone collected from Lazonby, near Penrith, Cumbria in the UK. This aeolian sandstone is Triassic in age – approximately 200 Ma. It belongs to the group of rocks known as the New Red Sandstone which date from the Permian (280 Ma) into the Triassic. The composition of this sandstone consists solely of spheroidal (millet seed) quartz grains with an iron oxide cement called haematite. It is the presence of this haematite that contributes to the distinct red – orange colouration of these samples. This lithology is typical of an aeolian (wind blown) hot desert environment. Available in multiple sizes, these specimens come supplied in a white card tray with information label.

Larvikite is an igneous plutonic rock and variant of monzonite from Larvik, Norway, due to its chemistry, it is composed mainly of orthoclase, albite and anorthite along with plagioclase which gives the rock a blue to silver shimmering effect. The igneous pluton formed during the Permian period, 292 – 298 million years ago during the the Variscan orogeny. Specimens of Puddingstone, collected from Hertfordshire, UK. Puddingstone is a variation of conglomerate, which is term used to describe a coarse grained sedimentary rock, featuring large, well rounded clasts in a finer grained matrix. It dates back to the Paleocene to Eocene period around 56 millions years ago. This particular rock is composed almost entirely of silica and has no porosity, likely contributing to its notorious hardness. This rare rock is only found in quantity at one locality in Hertfordshire. As such, it is becoming exceedingly difficult to obtain. This rock is available in multiple sizes and each piece comes supplied in a white card tray with information label.
