Anorthosite is a phaneritic, intrusive igneous rock characterized by a predominance of plagioclase feldspar (90–100%), and a minimal mafic component (0–10%) including Pyroxene, ilmenite, magnetite, and olivine. These thin sections exhibit a rock which has been deformed and as such the once large plagioclase crystals have recrystallized to form much smaller crystals.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.
We ship to all 50 states, Washington DC.

This anorthosite slide presents a thin section of an intrusive igneous rock called anorthosite. It is phaneritic in texture and characterized by a high predominance of plagioclase feldspar (90-100%) and a minimal mafic component (0-10%) with pyroxene, ilmenite, magnetite, and olivine. Anorthosite can be classified into Proterozoic and Archaean types based on age.
The thin sections come from Proterozoic material collected in Western Norway Falls. Most Proterozoic anorthosites undergo deformation despite the typically coarse-grained nature of anorthosite plutons. This deformation causes large plagioclase crystals to recrystallize into smaller ones, as shown by our examples. It alters the original grain shape and fabric, resulting in significantly smaller crystals.
The anorthosite slide provides an opportunity to actively study the mineralogy of this rock specimen in detail. Each thin section is 30 microns thick and includes a glass slide measuring 46 x 27 mm with a cover slip. They are supplied in a protective sleeve with a label for microscopy.

Big feldspar gabbro thin section exhibiting exactly what its name describes, feldspar crystals much larger than those present in the ordinary gabbro which we supply. Characteristic twinning in the plagioclase and the bright colours of the pyroxene make for an attractive thin section, perfect for educational use.

Stunning peridotite thin section exhibiting the bright and beautiful colours of olivine and pyroxene punctuated by relatively abundant plagioclase. Peridotite is a dense, coarse grained, ultramafic igneous rock consisting largely of olivine and pyroxene.

Torridonian sandstone thin section slide exhibiting a fine grained arenaceous nature. The Torridonian Sandstones date from the Pre-Cambrian & are amongst the oldest rocks to be found in the UK. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip.

Cretaceous sandstone thin section slide exhibiting the well sorted, fine and rounded nature of this arenaceous sandstone. The slides are 30 microns thick and measure 46 x 27 mm in size and have a cover slip of the section along with a protective cardboard sleeve.

Pumice thin section slide exhibiting the highly vesicular nature of this extrusive igneous rock. Pumice lavas tend to be silicic or felsic which are highly viscous thus do not allow the gas bubbles to escape efficiently. This material was collected from the Lipari islands of Italy.

Hornfels thin section microscope slide exhibiting a dark colour and a characteristic none crystalline form. Fine grains fit together like the fragments of a mosaic, this is often referred to as rough pavement or pavement structure. Larger quartz clasts are visible but these have recrystallised to form a fine, interlocking mosaic of quartz within the original grain cast.

Tufa thin section slide. Tufa is a variety of limestone, formed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals from ambient temperature water bodies. This particular material is from the Flandrian epoch of the Quaternary Period and it was collected in Caerwys, North Wales.

Hornblende Gneiss thin section slide exhibiting an abundance of the mafic mineral hornblende, accompanied by less abundant biotite mica, quartz and feldspar. This material was collected by staff from Southern Norway. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Purbeck Limestone thin section slide exhibiting densely pack shells of varying fauna. This rock is particularly interesting in thin section; numerous shells from varying organisms such as bivalves and gastropods along with numerous signs of mineral replacement and dissolution offers an opportunity to interpret the complex diagenetic history of the rock.

Norwegian gneiss thin section slide exhibiting a dominant felsic composition i.e. quartz and plagioclase with less prominent mafic bands. We collected this material from Evje, Norway. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Glaucophane Schist thin section microscope slide exhibiting a clear fabric and a wonderful blue hue under plane polarised light. This material was collected from the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.
