Biotite Granite slide – a coarse-grained, felsic intrusive igneous rock enriched with quartz, feldspars, and micas. Biotite granite, specifically, boasts milky quartz, plagioclase feldspar, and biotite mica crystals. These thin sections vividly display the contrasting colors. In PPL view, the vibrant green, brown, or tanned hues of biotite proudly stand out against the colorless quartz and feldspar crystals. In XPL view, the biotite steals the show with its strong interference colors of 3rd and 4th order, although the intense mineral color may slightly mask this distinction.
We meticulously collected the material for these thin sections from Scotland, UK. The Biotite Granite slides measures 30 microns in thickness and rests on a 46 x 27 mm glass slide. They come supplied in a protective sleeve and information label.

Shap granite igneous rock specimens from Shap Fell, Cumbria, UK which exhibit typical coarse grained crystalline textures expected of intrusive felsic rocks, being composed of quartz, plagioclase and orthoclase feldspar and biotite mica. This popular granite is very sought after for a variety of applications and has a colourful appearance. It is believed to have formed during the early Devonian period as a plutonic intrusion in the area and is quarried extensively. Samples are ideal for collectors of all levels and ages as well as all educational levels as the minerals can be easily described with the origin and processes being suitable to teach higher level students. Samples are available in three sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Shap Granite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
Pink Granite, rich in potassium feldspars giving the distinctive pink hue, easily identifiable as a granite due to its mineral composition. Specimens come from Scotland and are supplied in a card tray with label.

Microgranite thin section slide exhibiting the medium grained nature of this intrusive igneous rock. The crystals in microgranite are smaller than those of normal granite indicating that it cooled at a quicker rate.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Oolitic limestone thin section slide exhibiting textbook ooid grains, some with a clear nucleus and concentric calcareous layers. These microscope slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and allow for a more detailed view of the ooid grains and an opportunity to intepret the diagenetic history of the rock.

Hornblende Gneiss thin section slide exhibiting an abundance of the mafic mineral hornblende, accompanied by less abundant biotite mica, quartz and feldspar. This material was collected by staff from Southern Norway. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Lignite thin section slide. Lignite coal and indeed all other varieties of coal are classed as organic sedimentary rocks. It has a high carbon content 25 – 35% & a moisture content up to 66%. The high volatile component of lignite is clearly reflected in the thin section view, particularly when compared with those of higher grade coals.

These thin sections exhibit beautiful crystals of olivine, pyroxene and augite, which often shows oscillatory zonation held within a matrix of plagioclase feldspar. The slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and are useful for interpreting the crystallisation history of the rock.
