Microscope slides of Biotite Mica from Norway, these slides display the crystal structure of the mineral on a microscopic level which assists in the identification of this mineral in other slides. Biotite mica is a black, platy mineral which forms in sheets, it belongs to the mica group of minerals which also includes muscovite, phlogopite and lepidolite micas. Being a common phyllosilicate mineral, it is also found in many rocks, particularly of igneous and metamorphic origin, such as mica schist, gneisses and granites. The crystal system of mica in general is monoclinic and like other mica minerals, biotite has a perfect basal cleavage and consists of flexible sheets or lamellae, which easily flake off, with tabular to prismatic crystals. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy & educational use.

Specimens of Biotite Mica, collected from Pakistan. Biotite Mica is a black, platy mineral that forms in sheets. It is a major rock forming mineral, especially in rocks of igneous or metamorphic origin. Specimens come in lots of 1kg, in a heavy duty polythene bag with an information label. Pieces come in various sizes.

Specimens of biotite mica from Madagascar. These samples of biotite mica are of a higher quality than our specimens from Pakistan and Norway, they are supplied in a white card tray with an information label.
Microscope slides of hornblende from Norway, these slides display the crystal structure of the mineral on a microscopic level which assists in the identification of this mineral in other slides. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy & educational use.

Biotite mica mineral specimens from Baluchistan, Pakistan available in moderately thick laminar sheets, as expected of this mineral, the samples exhibit a black colouration with a dull lustre. They serves as excellent examples of phyllosilicate minerals for collectors or educational use, with the pieces coming supplied in a labelled card tray.

Rare eclogite thin section slides cut from our Norwegian eclogite hand specimens. Eclogite is a rare rock, composed of mainly two minerals, reddish-brown garnets and Omphacite (green pyroxene), our thin sections exhibit this clearly.

Hornfels thin section microscope slide exhibiting a dark colour and a characteristic none crystalline form. Fine grains fit together like the fragments of a mosaic, this is often referred to as rough pavement or pavement structure. Larger quartz clasts are visible but these have recrystallised to form a fine, interlocking mosaic of quartz within the original grain cast.

Bytownite basalt thin section slide exhibiting phenocryts of bytownite feldspar within a fine basaltic groundmass. These thin sections depict beautifully a textbook porphyritic texture. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size.

Hornblende Gneiss thin section slide exhibiting an abundance of the mafic mineral hornblende, accompanied by less abundant biotite mica, quartz and feldspar. This material was collected by staff from Southern Norway. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

A thin section of mylonite which was collected from the metamorphic region of Lom, Central Norway. Mylonite is a fine-grained, compact rock produced by dynamic recrystallisation of the constituent minerals resulting in a reduction of the grain size of the rock.

Torridonian sandstone thin section slide exhibiting a fine grained arenaceous nature. The Torridonian Sandstones date from the Pre-Cambrian & are amongst the oldest rocks to be found in the UK. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip.

Syenite thin section slide. The thin sections show a dominant feldspar mass ( orthoclase ) with occurrences of hornblende, amphibole and clinopyroxene. Biotite mica may also be present however its occurrence is rare, The thin section is supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Metaquartzite thin section slide exhibiting a fine, interlocking mosaic of quartz crystals characteristic of this metamorphic rock. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes. This material was collected near Holyhead on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales.

Tufa thin section slide. Tufa is a variety of limestone, formed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals from ambient temperature water bodies. This particular material is from the Flandrian epoch of the Quaternary Period and it was collected in Caerwys, North Wales.

Welded tuff thin section slide exhibiting a jumbled mass of irregularly sized broken clasts held in situ by finer ash particles which have become welded together. This material was collected from Cumbria, the original rock is likely rhyolite, and indeed in hand specimen the tuff almost still looks like rhyolite and appears to show a form of banding.

Norwegian gneiss thin section slide exhibiting a dominant felsic composition i.e. quartz and plagioclase with less prominent mafic bands. We collected this material from Evje, Norway. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Diorite thin section slide. Diorite is a grey to dark-grey intermediate intrusive igneous rock composed principally of plagioclase feldspar (typically andesine), biotite mica, hornblende, and/or pyroxene. This particular material was collected in Cumbria.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.
