Metaquartzite thin section slide exhibiting a fine interlocking mosaic of quartz crystals characteristic of this metamorphic rock. Metaquartzite is a non foliated metamorphic rock associated with tectonic compression within orogenic belt. The original individual quartz grains recrystallize along with the former cementing material to form an interlocking mosaic of quartz crystals. Most or all of the original texture and sedimentary structures of the original sandstone are erased by the metamorphism. Minor amounts of former cementing materials, iron oxide, silica, carbonate and clay, often migrate during recrystallisation and metamorphosis. This causes streaks and lenses to form within the quartzite which may also be present in the thin section. This material was collected near Holyhead on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.
