Chalk is a soft, white, porous sedimentary carbonate rock, a form of limestone. Cretaceous in age. It forms under reasonably deep marine conditions from the gradual accumulation of minute calcite plates (coccoliths) shed from micro-organisms called coccolithophores. It is common to find chert or flint nodules embedded in chalk. Brilliant white chalk cliffs are a dominant feature of the Yorkshire coast & the south coast of England. Supplied by weight in lots of 1 kilo, pieces are random in size and come in a polythene bag with a data label.

Specimens of Chalk, collected from Yorkshire, in the UK. Chalk is a soft, white, porous sedimentary carbonate rock and form of limestone. It forms in reasonably deep marine conditions, by the gradual accumulation of minute calcite plates, known as coccoliths, which shed from micro-organisms called coccolithophores. Additionally, it is not uncommon to find flint or chert nodules embedded in chalk. These specimens are Cretaceous in age, available in multiple sizes, and supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Chalk thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Specimens of Red Marl, collected from Westbury upon Severn in Gloucestershire, UK. Marl is a term that describes an unconsolidated sedimentary rock, that consists of clay and lime. This red marl is part of the Keuper Marls which dates to the early Triassic Mercia Mudstone group. It is a calcium carbonate rich mudstone which forms in Sahara-like desert conditions. The red colouration in these specimens comes from the presence of oxidised iron compounds. Specimens are available in multiple sizes and come in a white card tray with an information label.
We also supply Red Marl thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
Specimens of Tea Green Marl, collected from Gloucestershire, UK. Marl is a term that describes an unconsolidated sedimentary rock, that consists of clay and lime. This Tea Green Marl is part of the Blue Anchor Formation which dates to the Triassic Mercia Mudstone group. This is known as the Keuper Marls. This lithology typically comprises dolomitic silty to porcelanous mudstone. These specimens are shallow marine in origin. These pieces are available in multiple sizes and come in a white card tray with an information label.

Lower Carboniferous crinoidal limestone from Derbyshire, U.K. Supplie dby weight in lots of 1 kg. Comes in a polythene bag with an information label.
Red chalk is early Cretaceous in age. It is chemically very similar to the later & better known white chalk.

Limestone, a common sedimentary rock often used in building and stone work. These samples are carboniferous in age and are supplied by weight in lots of 1 kg.
Pumice thin section slide exhibiting the highly vesicular nature of this extrusive igneous rock. Pumice lavas tend to be silicic or felsic which are highly viscous thus do not allow the gas bubbles to escape efficiently. This material was collected from the Lipari islands of Italy.

Banded rhyolite from Glen Coe, Scotland showing laminar flow banding which was produced by the viscous lava which formed the rock, available in various sizes, these specimens are suitable for educational use to display flow banding. Supplied in a card tray with an information label.

This Mahogany obsidian is sourced in the United States of America. Impurities of magnesium and iron give this variety a red or brown appearance hence the name ‘mahogany obsidian’ or oak obsidian. Specimens are supplied in a polythene bag in lots of 1 kg with a label.

Graphic Granite is a leucocratic igneous rock found predominantly in granitic pegmatites. It’s coarse intergrowths of feldspars display a Runic or Cuneiform configuration hence the term “graphic”

Pumice specimens from the Lipari islands, Italy. Pumice is an igneous rock with a highly porous structure resulting from trapped gas bubbles as the lava was being ejected. The rock is usually very light & buoyant in water. Specimens are supplied in a card tray with label.
We also supply Pumice thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass derived from a rapidly cooled high silica lava. Often associated with the margins of Rhyolitic lava flows. It has little or no discernable crystalline structure. Specimens are supplied in a polythene bag in lots of 1 kg with a label.
Snowflake obsidian is quite striking in appearance. It is characterised by the inclusion of radially clustered crystals of cristobalite, which when viewed at a glance, appear like snowflakes on the surface of the rock. These crystal clusters are set in an otherwise black vitreous matrix of obsidian, which is an naturally occurring volcanic glass, even exhibiting a conchoidal fracture. Cristobalite is a high temperature polymorph of silica, it can form as a result of the devitrification of the obsidian. These specimens come from Java, Indonesia and are supplied in card trays, sizes which are optional, each tray also has a small data label supplied.
We also supply Snowflake Obsidian thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
Adamellite granite also known as shap granite from Cumbria, famous for its large pink feldspar crystals his granite is well known. The samples come from the Shap Quarry, Shap Fell, Cumbria and are supplied in a polythene bag in lots of 1 kg with a label.
Rhyolite thin section slide exhibiting the fine grained nature of this felsic igneous rock. The thin section shows a silica rich mineral assemblage of fine grained quartz and plagioclase. Accessory minerals present include biotite mica and hornblende. This material was collected from Cumbria, UK.

Syenite thin section slide. The thin sections show a dominant feldspar mass ( orthoclase ) with occurrences of hornblende, amphibole and clinopyroxene. Biotite mica may also be present however its occurrence is rare, The thin section is supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Microgranite thin section slide exhibiting the medium grained nature of this intrusive igneous rock. The crystals in microgranite are smaller than those of normal granite indicating that it cooled at a quicker rate.
