Chlamys are a species of scallop belonging to the pectinidae family (pectens), these particualr specimens are fossils and were found in strata which is of the Miocene epoch, part of the Neogene period, making the fossils 23 to 5 million years old. The are from the Coral bay area of Cyprus, a location well known for clam fossils. These small and delicate fossils have been prepped and cleaned, there for exhibit no matrix, this also allows one to see fine minute details on the shells, such as the fine ribbing and the very minute ‘spikes’ which protrude upward from the shells surface. These can be seen much easier with the aid of a magnifier. The shells measure approximately 2 to 3 cm in size and come supplied in a packet with a data card.
