This pale buff grey limestone was laid down about 300 Ma during the Lower Carboniferous in a shallow marine setting. The fossil crinoids belong to the sea lily family & like all echinodermata have 5 arms. Locally they are referred to as the “Derbyshire Screws” because of their appearance. Bivalves, brachiopods & corals are sometimes to be found along with the crinoids. This product is supplied by weight in lots of 1 kg. The size of pieces within the bag will vary.

Specimens of Crinoidal Limestone, collected from Derbyshire in the UK. Limestone is a common, well known sedimentary rock. It consists of the calcium-rich shells, bones, and skeletons of the fauna that dominated during that period. It was laid down approximately 350 million years ago in semi tropical seas and comes from the Dinantian epoch of the Lower Carboniferous. This limestone in particular contains crinoids which are a group of ancient marine invertebrates, and part of the sea lily family. Specimens are available in various sizes and come supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Crinoidal Limestone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Carboniferous coral limestone from Anglesey, North Wales. Composed largely of well preserved Lithostrotion corals, supplied in lots of 1 kilogram.
Specimens of Limestone, collected from Derbyshire. This rock is very pure, about 98% soluble in rainwater (over time) leaving only residual clay. Its uses include aggregate, building stone, the manufacture of cement, paper & calcium carbide. Available in various sizes, each piece comes supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Limestone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

A small hand sample of fossil limestone containing numerous small Scyphocrinites crinoid stem fragments. Crinoids are fossilised sea lilies, these particular sample come from South Morocco. Often the stems are only preserved in fragments as can be seen. Samples measure approx in 3″ size and come in a small card tray with a label.

Pink Granite, rich in potassium feldspars giving the distinctive pink hue, easily identifiable as a granite due to its mineral composition. Specimens come from Scotland and are supplied in a card tray with label.

Graphic granite is an igneous pegmatite rock from Iveland, Norway, which forms in intrusive batholithic bodies that have a felsic composition. As such, the rock is mainly composed of quartz and orthoclase feldspar crystals and lacks any mica, making the rock leucocratic. These samples have what is known as a graphic texture, due to the formation of the crystals, which result in an appearance similar to that of cuneiform text which was once used by ancient human cultures. A brightly coloured, eye catching rock, the samples are suitable for collectors and educational use at higher levels and come available in three sizes. Each specimens is supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Adamellite granite also known as shap granite from Cumbria, famous for its large pink feldspar crystals his granite is well known. The samples come from the Shap Quarry, Shap Fell, Cumbria and are supplied in a polythene bag in lots of 1 kg with a label.
Metagabbro specimens from Lom, Central Norway. Also known as scapolite-hornblende due to the absence of feldspar in the rock are available in 3 optional sizes and come supplied in a card tray with a data label.

Larvikite is an igneous plutonic rock and variant of monzonite from Larvik, Norway, due to its chemistry, it is composed mainly of orthoclase, albite and anorthite along with plagioclase which gives the rock a blue to silver shimmering effect. The igneous pluton formed during the Permian period, 292 – 298 million years ago during the the Variscan orogeny. A beautiful rock to observe due to its coarse crystalline texture and schiller effect, the samples are ideal for general interest, collectors and educational use with specimens being available in three sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Syenite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Syenite thin section slide. The thin sections show a dominant feldspar mass ( orthoclase ) with occurrences of hornblende, amphibole and clinopyroxene. Biotite mica may also be present however its occurrence is rare, The thin section is supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Specimens of Puddingstone, collected from Hertfordshire, UK. Puddingstone is a variation of conglomerate, which is term used to describe a coarse grained sedimentary rock, featuring large, well rounded clasts in a finer grained matrix. It dates back to the Paleocene to Eocene period around 56 millions years ago. This particular rock is composed almost entirely of silica and has no porosity, likely contributing to its notorious hardness. This rare rock is only found in quantity at one locality in Hertfordshire. As such, it is becoming exceedingly difficult to obtain. This rock is available in multiple sizes and each piece comes supplied in a white card tray with information label.
Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass derived from a rapidly cooled high silica lava. Often associated with the margins of Rhyolitic lava flows. It has little or no discernable crystalline structure. Specimens are supplied in a polythene bag in lots of 1 kg with a label.
Obsidian, also known as ‘volcanic glass’ is a felsic, extrusive igneous rock. Crystal growth is minimal / absent within obsidian due to rapid solidification rates which inhibit crystal growth thus giving the rock a glassy appearance.
