Greywacke thin section slide exhibiting the textbook poorly sorted, angular nature of this rock. The origin of greywacke was once an area of much debate but it is now accepted that greywacke largely forms as a result of deposition from turbidity currents. The mix of coarser angular quartz, feldspar and lithic fragments held within a fine grained matrix is clearly an indication of rapid deposition. These thin sections exhibit all of the key features one would expect from a greywacke specimen, perfect for educational use. These samples are Silurian in age & sourced from around Moffat in Scotland. The thin section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.

Specimens of Breccia, collected from Yorkshire. Breccia is a term that describes coarse grained sedimentary rocks, with large angular clasts, surrounded by a finer grained matrix. These specimens date to the Holocene period, approximately within the last 11ooo years. These specimens are available in multiple sizes and come supplied in a white card tray with information label.

Millstone grit thin section slide exhibiting the coarse and siliceous nature of this British Carboniferous coarse sandstone. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.

Mudstone thin section microscope slide composed of predominantly clay minerals and organic matter with occurrences of silt grade quartz. This material was laid down in a low energy, oxygen starved environment during the Carboniferous Period and it was collected from Lancashire, UK.

Specimens of Millstone Grit, collected from Horwich, Bolton in the UK. Millstone Grit is part of the sandstone family and ranges from fine to very coarse grained. It is a feldspathic sandstone, interbedded with grey siltstones and mudstones, with subordinate marine shaly mudstone, claystone, coals and seatearths. It is Carboniferous (Namurian) in age and laid down in estuarine to tidal environments. Millstone Grit forms many prominent features throughout the north of England. These specimens are available in multiple sizes and come supplied in a white card tray with an information label.
We also supply Millstone Grit thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Specimens of Greywacke, collected from around Moffat, in Soctland. Greywacke is a type of dark, hard, grey or brown sandstone. It typically displays poor sorting with angular grains of quartz, feldspar & lithic fragments set in a very fine matrix. Greywacke is a turbidite, meaning it forms via deposition from sediment laden currents that move very rapidly downslope through water. These are fairly typical of the margins of continental shelves. These rocks are Silurian in age. Specimens are available in multiple sizes and come in a white card tray with an information label.
We also supply Greywacke thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Big feldspar gabbro thin section exhibiting exactly what its name describes, feldspar crystals much larger than those present in the ordinary gabbro which we supply. Characteristic twinning in the plagioclase and the bright colours of the pyroxene make for an attractive thin section, perfect for educational use.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Stunning peridotite thin section exhibiting the bright and beautiful colours of olivine and pyroxene punctuated by relatively abundant plagioclase. Peridotite is a dense, coarse grained, ultramafic igneous rock consisting largely of olivine and pyroxene.

Garnet Mica Schist thin section exhibiting textbook strain fabric and alignment of platy minerals within this popular metamorphic rock. This schist is from the Dalradian series, a complicated group of various metamorphic rocks which are dated to the Pre-Cambrian period and is present in both Scotland and Ireland.

Welded tuff thin section slide exhibiting a jumbled mass of irregularly sized broken clasts held in situ by finer ash particles which have become welded together. This material was collected from Cumbria, the original rock is likely rhyolite, and indeed in hand specimen the tuff almost still looks like rhyolite and appears to show a form of banding.

Rhyolite thin section slide exhibiting the fine grained nature of this felsic igneous rock. The thin section shows a silica rich mineral assemblage of fine grained quartz and plagioclase. Accessory minerals present include biotite mica and hornblende. This material was collected from Cumbria, UK.

Diorite thin section slide. Diorite is a grey to dark-grey intermediate intrusive igneous rock composed principally of plagioclase feldspar (typically andesine), biotite mica, hornblende, and/or pyroxene. This particular material was collected in Cumbria.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Hornfels thin section microscope slide exhibiting a dark colour and a characteristic none crystalline form. Fine grains fit together like the fragments of a mosaic, this is often referred to as rough pavement or pavement structure. Larger quartz clasts are visible but these have recrystallised to form a fine, interlocking mosaic of quartz within the original grain cast.

Travertine thin section slide. Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral rich springs, especially hot springs. It is formed by the rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate, often at the margins of a hot spring or in a limestone caves.

Cordierite Hornfels thin section microscope slide exhibiting a dark colour and a characteristic none crystalline form. Fine grains fit together like the fragments of a mosaic, this is often referred to as rough pavement or pavement structure. Larger crystals of cordierite can be seen scattered throughout the fine matrix.

Tufa thin section slide. Tufa is a variety of limestone, formed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals from ambient temperature water bodies. This particular material is from the Flandrian epoch of the Quaternary Period and it was collected in Caerwys, North Wales.

Torridonian sandstone thin section slide exhibiting a fine grained arenaceous nature. The Torridonian Sandstones date from the Pre-Cambrian & are amongst the oldest rocks to be found in the UK. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip.
