Hornfels thin section microscope slide exhibiting a dark colour and a characteristic none crystalline form. Fine grains fit together like the fragments of a mosaic, this is often referred to as rough pavement or pavement structure. Larger quartz clasts are visible but these have recrystallised to form a fine, interlocking mosaic of quartz within the original grain cast.

Hornfels forms by contact metamorphism and as such the rock is not foliated due to the absence of pressure thus the thin sections show no grain fabric. They are often derived from original rocks such as sandstone, shale, slate, limestone and so on. This particular material was collected by staff from Shap quarry, Cumbria. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

This variation of Hornfels exhibits strong banding with small crystals of Cordierite. The samples were collected from near Carrock Fell. Cumbria, UK.
We also supply Cordierite Hornfels thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Metaquartzite thin section slide exhibiting a fine, interlocking mosaic of quartz crystals characteristic of this metamorphic rock. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes. This material was collected near Holyhead on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales.

Cordierite Hornfels thin section microscope slide exhibiting a dark colour and a characteristic none crystalline form. Fine grains fit together like the fragments of a mosaic, this is often referred to as rough pavement or pavement structure. Larger crystals of cordierite can be seen scattered throughout the fine matrix.

Banded hornfels exhibiting an alternating band feature, likely due to the original rock being layered such as sandstone, shale etc. The specimens come from Kentellen, Scotland, are available in different sizes and come in a card tray, suitable for school use.

Hornfels, dark blue or black in colour collected from Shap quarry, Cumbria, a strong, durable rock, splintery when broken is comprised of mafic minerals, the rock may also exhibit acoustic properties. Supplied in a sized up card tray with an information label.
We also supply Hornfels thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Welded tuff thin section slide exhibiting a jumbled mass of irregularly sized broken clasts held in situ by finer ash particles which have become welded together. This material was collected from Cumbria, the original rock is likely rhyolite, and indeed in hand specimen the tuff almost still looks like rhyolite and appears to show a form of banding.

Bytownite basalt thin section slide exhibiting phenocryts of bytownite feldspar within a fine basaltic groundmass. These thin sections depict beautifully a textbook porphyritic texture. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size.

Syenite thin section slide. The thin sections show a dominant feldspar mass ( orthoclase ) with occurrences of hornblende, amphibole and clinopyroxene. Biotite mica may also be present however its occurrence is rare, The thin section is supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Diorite thin section slide. Diorite is a grey to dark-grey intermediate intrusive igneous rock composed principally of plagioclase feldspar (typically andesine), biotite mica, hornblende, and/or pyroxene. This particular material was collected in Cumbria.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Cretaceous sandstone thin section slide exhibiting the well sorted, fine and rounded nature of this arenaceous sandstone. The slides are 30 microns thick and measure 46 x 27 mm in size and have a cover slip of the section along with a protective cardboard sleeve.

Red marl thin section slide taken from Lower Triassic strata belonging to the Mercia Mudstone Group, formerly known as the Keuper Marls. Marl describes rock which is a calcium carbonate rich i.e. 35% – 65% CaCO3 with the remainder being clay with varying amounts of silt

Pumice thin section slide exhibiting the highly vesicular nature of this extrusive igneous rock. Pumice lavas tend to be silicic or felsic which are highly viscous thus do not allow the gas bubbles to escape efficiently. This material was collected from the Lipari islands of Italy.

Norwegian gneiss thin section slide exhibiting a dominant felsic composition i.e. quartz and plagioclase with less prominent mafic bands. We collected this material from Evje, Norway. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Rhyolite thin section slide exhibiting the fine grained nature of this felsic igneous rock. The thin section shows a silica rich mineral assemblage of fine grained quartz and plagioclase. Accessory minerals present include biotite mica and hornblende. This material was collected from Cumbria, UK.

Oolitic limestone thin section slide exhibiting textbook ooid grains, some with a clear nucleus and concentric calcareous layers. These microscope slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and allow for a more detailed view of the ooid grains and an opportunity to intepret the diagenetic history of the rock.

These thin sections exhibit beautiful crystals of olivine, pyroxene and augite, which often shows oscillatory zonation held within a matrix of plagioclase feldspar. The slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and are useful for interpreting the crystallisation history of the rock.
