Marble thin section microscope slide exhibiting and a high birefringence, twinning and an interlocking nature setting it apart from the sedimentary quartzite rocks which we also supply. Marble is a hard crystalline metamorphic rock; it shows no foliation at all and is usually composed of carbonate minerals such as calcite or dolomite and as such, it is typically derived from limestone. In hand specimen the marble is pure white and coarse suggesting a dolomitic origin. This particular material comes from Spain. The glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy, petrography & educational use.

Specimens of Frosterley Marble, collected from Harewood Quarry, Co. Durham in the UK. Frosterley Marble is not actually a marble, but rather a black limestone consisting of Carboniferous age fossil corals. This makes it a sedimentary rock. The most famous use of Frosterley Marble is in Durham Cathedral where the ceiling of the Ceiling of the Chapel of Nine Altars has slender column supports composed from this stone. These specimens are available in multiple sizes and come supplied in a white card tray with an information label.

Metaquartzite thin section slide exhibiting a fine, interlocking mosaic of quartz crystals characteristic of this metamorphic rock. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes. This material was collected near Holyhead on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales.

Granite adamellite thin section slide exhibiting crystals of quartz, biotite and feldspar. We collected this material from the famous Shap Fell quarry, in Cumbria hence the rocks alternative name ‘ Shap Granite ‘.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Hornblende Gneiss thin section slide exhibiting an abundance of the mafic mineral hornblende, accompanied by less abundant biotite mica, quartz and feldspar. This material was collected by staff from Southern Norway. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Gabbro thin section exhibiting some of the textbook features one would expect from this coarse, mafic igneous rock. These slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and are useful for interpreting the crystalisation history of the rock.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

These thin sections exhibit beautiful crystals of olivine, pyroxene and augite, which often shows oscillatory zonation held within a matrix of plagioclase feldspar. The slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and are useful for interpreting the crystallisation history of the rock.

A thin section of mylonite which was collected from the metamorphic region of Lom, Central Norway. Mylonite is a fine-grained, compact rock produced by dynamic recrystallisation of the constituent minerals resulting in a reduction of the grain size of the rock.

Obsidian, also known as ‘volcanic glass’ is a felsic, extrusive igneous rock. Crystal growth is minimal / absent within obsidian due to rapid solidification rates which inhibit crystal growth thus giving the rock a glassy appearance.
