Metaquartzite is a hard, non-foliated metamorphic rock which was originally pure quartz sandstone which was converted into quartzite through the heat and pressure usually associated with tectonic compression within orogenic belts. Pure quartzite is usually white to grey, though quartzites often occur in various shades of pink and red due to varying amounts of iron oxide (Fe2O3). Other colors, such as yellow, green, blue and orange, are due to other mineral impurities.
The original individual quartz grains recrystallize along with the former cementing material to form an interlocking mosaic of quartz crystals. Most or all of the original texture and sedimentary structures of the sandstone are erased by the metamorphism The grainy, sandpaper-like surface becomes glassy in appearance. Minor amounts of former cementing materials, iron oxide, silica, carbonate and clay, often migrate during recrystallization and metamorphosis. This causes streaks and lenses to form within the quartzite. This example was collected near Holyhead on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales, due to mineral impurities during formation, these samples have a pale green colouration to them as opposed to the Scottish material we supply, which is pure white. Specimens are supplied in labelled card trays and are available in various sizes.

Metaquartzite collected from Onich near Ballachulish, Scotland, which detail text book quality metaquartzite, pure white, hard and composed mainly of quartz with very few impurities, these rock specimens are ideal for educational use or as part of a larger collection of rocks, supplied in a card tray with a label.
Metaquartzite specimens found in Anglesey, Specimens are supplied in a polythene bag in lots of 1 kg with a label.
Specimens of Estuarine Sandstone, collected from Lancashire. Sandstone is a common, well known sedimentary rock, primarily composed of quartz grains. Estuarine sandstone as the name implies was laid down as fine cross bedded deposits at the mouths of rivers. Occasional marine incursions are evident from fossils & ripple bedding. Some of the fine beds are peppered with mica flakes. Specimens are supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Deltaic Sandstone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
White marble exhibiting medium interlocking crystals suggesting a limestone rock origin These particular specimens are from Torrin Quarry on the Isle of Skye, Scotland and are available in three optional sizes.
We also supply Marble thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Specimens of Aeolian Sandstone collected from Lazonby, near Penrith, Cumbria in the UK. This aeolian sandstone is Triassic in age – approximately 200 Ma. It belongs to the group of rocks known as the New Red Sandstone which date from the Permian (280 Ma) into the Triassic. The composition of this sandstone consists solely of spheroidal (millet seed) quartz grains with an iron oxide cement called haematite. It is the presence of this haematite that contributes to the distinct red – orange colouration of these samples. This lithology is typical of an aeolian (wind blown) hot desert environment. Available in multiple sizes, these specimens come supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Aeolian Sandstone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
Micro Granite is a variation of the granite group of rocks, composed of the minerals quartz, feldspar and mica. These particular samples were collected from Threlkeld quarry, Cumbria, UK. They are supplied in a small white tray with an information label.
We also supply Microgranite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Rhyolite Felsite, a highly felsitic composed variation of Rhyolite, found in Fife, Scotland, an extrusive igneous rock composed of sodium, quartz and feldspar, thus often having a pale white to pink colouration. Available in various sizes and supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Gabbro igneous rock specimens from Balmedie quarry, Aberdeen, Scotland which exhibit a coars grained texture from the crystals. Formed as a mafic pluton intrusion, the samples contain pyroxenes such as augite along side plagioclase feldspar, amphibole and olivine crystals. They are derived from a body known as the Belhelvie basic intrusion which the parent unit being the Caledonian Supersuite. Samples exhibit a grey colouration and density and are suitable for the more serious or professional collector or higher educational use to differentiate similar looking igneous rocks with different compositions and origins. Available in three sizes, the specimens come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Gabbro thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Specimens of Limestone, collected from Derbyshire. Limestone is a common, well known sedimentary rock. It consists of the calcium-rich shells, bones, and skeletons of the fauna that dominated during that period. It was laid down approximately 350 million years ago in semi tropical seas and comes from the Dinantian epoch of the Lower Carboniferous. This rock is very pure, about 98% soluble in rainwater (over time) leaving only residual clay. Its uses include aggregate, building stone, the manufacture of cement, paper & calcium carbide. Available in various sizes, each piece comes supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Limestone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Diorite rock specimens from Cockermouth, Cumbria, is an intrusive igneous rock from the Ordovician period with a coarse, phaneratic texture composed of plagioclase feldspar, biotite mica as well as hornblende with intermediate chemistry. Found with the Skiddaw group, the rock samples are more suited for serious collectors and higher level education to describe the chemistry and mineralogy of various igneous groups. Available in 3 sizes and supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Diorite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Snowflake obsidian is quite striking in appearance. It is characterised by the inclusion of radially clustered crystals of cristobalite, which when viewed at a glance, appear like snowflakes on the surface of the rock. These crystal clusters are set in an otherwise black vitreous matrix of obsidian, which is an naturally occurring volcanic glass, even exhibiting a conchoidal fracture. Cristobalite is a high temperature polymorph of silica, it can form as a result of the devitrification of the obsidian. These specimens come from Java, Indonesia and are supplied in card trays, sizes which are optional, each tray also has a small data label supplied.
We also supply Snowflake Obsidian thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
Pink Granite, rich in potassium feldspars giving the distinctive pink hue, easily identifiable as a granite due to its mineral composition. Specimens come from Scotland and are supplied in a card tray with label.

Larvikite is an igneous plutonic rock and variant of monzonite from Larvik, Norway, due to its chemistry, it is composed mainly of orthoclase, albite and anorthite along with plagioclase which gives the rock a blue to silver shimmering effect. The igneous pluton formed during the Permian period, 292 – 298 million years ago during the the Variscan orogeny. A beautiful rock to observe due to its coarse crystalline texture and schiller effect, the samples are ideal for general interest, collectors and educational use with specimens being available in three sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Syenite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

The rock is part of the St. Austell pluton which formed 280 million years ago. An off white colour with gold and black flecks of micas, the rock has a unique chemistry and resulted in the rich mineralisation of ores in the area. The samples are suitable for collectors and educational use to show granite variants, available in three sizes. Each piece will come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
