Mudstone is a very fine grained sedimentary rock composed of clay minerals & silt sized quartz grains that lacks a well developed bedding structure or fissility. This lithology is typically associated with low energy environments such as tidal flats, lakes or deep marine. This example is from the Carboniferous of Lancashire and is instead supplied in various random sizes by weight.

Ribbon banded mudstone, Silurian in age, collected from the Denbigh grits in Wales, UK. Supplied by weight, the product will come in a 1 kilogram bag and the size of samples inside will vary.
Specimens of Shale, collected from Yorkshire. Shale is a fine grained, clastic sedimentary rock composed of mud. This mud is a mixture of clay mineral flakes and tiny fragments of other minerals, especially quartz and calcite. Shale is characterised by thin laminae, parallel layering or bedding, less than one centimetre in thickness. This makes the rock very fissile. Shales are associated with quiet water deposition, such as in lakes, lagoons or deltas. For these specimens in particular, the depositional environment was deep water marine from the Jurassic formations of the Yorkshire coast. These specimens are available in multiple sizes and come supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Shale thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Specimens of Banded Mudstone, collected from Crummackdale in West Yorkshire, UK. These specimens are known locally as the Moughton Whetstone and are Silurian in age. Whilst their origins are uncertain, experts believe the concentric bands to be Liesegang rings. The mudstone is very hard and fine grained, which makes it an ideal honing stone. These specimens are available in multiple sizes and come in a white card tray with an information label.

Siltstone is a fine grained clastic rock which may or may not show laminations. Occasionally fossiliferous. This example is from the Carboniferous deposits around Huddersfield, Yorkshire.
We also supply Siltstone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Specimens of Ribbon Banded Mudstone, collected from North Wales. In particular, these specimens are Silurian in age & specifically from the Nantglyn Flag Group of the Denbigh Grit Formation. This largely grey rock shows alternating bands of fossiliferous mudstone and laminated muddy siltstone with subordinate thin pale green to yellowish lenticular bands of calcareous siltstones. These specimens are available in multiple sizes and come supplied in a white card tray with an information label.

Peridotite, found in Finland, is a dense, coarse grained igneous rock. It is commonly used in saunas due to certain porpertie. These rock specimens are ideal teaching aids or collectors specimens. Supplied in a card tray with label, offered in 3 optional sizes.
We also supply Peridotite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Pumice specimens from the Lipari islands, Italy. Pumice is an igneous rock with a highly porous structure resulting from trapped gas bubbles as the lava was being ejected. The rock is usually very light & buoyant in water. Specimens are supplied in a card tray with label.
We also supply Pumice thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Obsidian, also known as ‘volcanic glass’ is a felsic, extrusive igneous rock. Crystal growth is minimal / absent within obsidian due to rapid solidification rates which inhibit crystal growth thus giving the rock a glassy appearance.

This Mahogany obsidian is sourced in the United States of America. Impurities of magnesium and iron give this variety a red or brown appearance hence the name ‘mahogany obsidian’ or oak obsidian. Specimens are supplied in a polythene bag in lots of 1 kg with a label.

Snowflake obsidian is quite striking in appearance. It is characterised by the inclusion of radially clustered crystals of cristobalite, which when viewed at a glance, appear like snowflakes on the surface of the rock. These crystal clusters are set in an otherwise black vitreous matrix of obsidian, which is an naturally occurring volcanic glass, even exhibiting a conchoidal fracture. Cristobalite is a high temperature polymorph of silica, it can form as a result of the devitrification of the obsidian. These specimens come from Java, Indonesia and are supplied in card trays, sizes which are optional, each tray also has a small data label supplied.
We also supply Snowflake Obsidian thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
Rhyolite Felsite, a highly felsitic composed variation of Rhyolite, found in Fife, Scotland, an extrusive igneous rock composed of sodium, quartz and feldspar, thus often having a pale white to pink colouration. Available in various sizes and supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Specimens of Puddingstone, collected from Hertfordshire, UK. Puddingstone is a variation of conglomerate, which is term used to describe a coarse grained sedimentary rock, featuring large, well rounded clasts in a finer grained matrix. It dates back to the Paleocene to Eocene period around 56 millions years ago. This particular rock is composed almost entirely of silica and has no porosity, likely contributing to its notorious hardness. This rare rock is only found in quantity at one locality in Hertfordshire. As such, it is becoming exceedingly difficult to obtain. This rock is available in multiple sizes and each piece comes supplied in a white card tray with information label.
Metagabbro specimens from Lom, Central Norway. Also known as scapolite-hornblende due to the absence of feldspar in the rock are available in 3 optional sizes and come supplied in a card tray with a data label.

Pink Granite, rich in potassium feldspars giving the distinctive pink hue, easily identifiable as a granite due to its mineral composition. Specimens come from Scotland and are supplied in a card tray with label.
