Slate is a fine-grained, foliated, homogeneous metamorphic rock derived from a shale-type protolith composed of clay or volcanic ash through low-grade regional metamorphism. It is the finest grained foliated metamorphic rock. Foliation may not correspond to the original sedimentary layering, but instead is in planes perpendicular to the direction of compression. It has long been used as a roofing material. This Cambrian slate from North Wales and is supplied by weight in lots of 1 kilogram.

Phyllite is a foliated metaorphic rock formed from slate which has been further metamorphosed. These specimens from Cumbria show good, fine cleavage and a silky metallic lustre. Supplied in lots of 1 kg.
Slate from Wales, famous for its use as a roofing material, these specimens exhibit text book characteristics such as fine grain crystal structure, foliation, slatey cleavage and a variety of colours, excellent for educational use, supplied in various sizes.
We also supply Slate thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Specimens of Glaucophane Schist, collected from the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales. Glaucophane Schist is a Blueschist, which forms when basalts and similar rocks undergo high pressure and low temperature metamorphism. Specimens come in lots of 1kg, in a heavy duty polythene bag. Pieces come in various sizes.

Chistolite slate is a variation of slate which also contains chiastolite crystals within it,the slate its self is either a brick red or plum colour with the chiastolite crystals appearing as white lines and randomly orientated within the rock matrix. rock specimens are available in various sizes and will be supplied in a labelled card tray.
Metaquartzite specimens found in Anglesey, Specimens are supplied in a polythene bag in lots of 1 kg with a label.
Obsidian, also known as ‘volcanic glass’ is a felsic, extrusive igneous rock. Crystal growth is minimal / absent within obsidian due to rapid solidification rates which inhibit crystal growth thus giving the rock a glassy appearance.

Rhyolite thin section slide exhibiting the fine grained nature of this felsic igneous rock. The thin section shows a silica rich mineral assemblage of fine grained quartz and plagioclase. Accessory minerals present include biotite mica and hornblende. This material was collected from Cumbria, UK.

Shap granite igneous rock specimens from Shap Fell, Cumbria, UK which exhibit typical coarse grained crystalline textures expected of intrusive felsic rocks, being composed of quartz, plagioclase and orthoclase feldspar and biotite mica. This popular granite is very sought after for a variety of applications and has a colourful appearance. It is believed to have formed during the early Devonian period as a plutonic intrusion in the area and is quarried extensively. Samples are ideal for collectors of all levels and ages as well as all educational levels as the minerals can be easily described with the origin and processes being suitable to teach higher level students. Samples are available in three sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Shap Granite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
Rhyolite specimens found in Cumbria. Rhyolite is a felsic (silica rich) rock, often formed in highly explosive volcanoes. Specimens are supplied in a card tray with label.
We also supply Rhyolite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Pumice thin section slide exhibiting the highly vesicular nature of this extrusive igneous rock. Pumice lavas tend to be silicic or felsic which are highly viscous thus do not allow the gas bubbles to escape efficiently. This material was collected from the Lipari islands of Italy.

Banded rhyolite from Glen Coe, Scotland showing laminar flow banding which was produced by the viscous lava which formed the rock, available in various sizes, these specimens are suitable for educational use to display flow banding. Supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Mahogany obsidian sourced from the United States of America. Impurities of magnesium and iron give this variety a red or brown appearance hence the name ‘mahogany obsidian’ or oak obsidian. Each Sample is supplied in a labelled card tray.

Adamellite granite also known as shap granite from Cumbria, famous for its large pink feldspar crystals his granite is well known. The samples come from the Shap Quarry, Shap Fell, Cumbria and are supplied in a polythene bag in lots of 1 kg with a label.
Graphic granite is an igneous pegmatite rock from Iveland, Norway, which forms in intrusive batholithic bodies that have a felsic composition. As such, the rock is mainly composed of quartz and orthoclase feldspar crystals and lacks any mica, making the rock leucocratic. These samples have what is known as a graphic texture, due to the formation of the crystals, which result in an appearance similar to that of cuneiform text which was once used by ancient human cultures. A brightly coloured, eye catching rock, the samples are suitable for collectors and educational use at higher levels and come available in three sizes. Each specimens is supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass derived from a rapidly cooled high silica lava. Often associated with the margins of Rhyolitic lava flows. It has little or no discernable crystalline structure. Specimens are supplied in a polythene bag in lots of 1 kg with a label.
Graphic Granite is a leucocratic igneous rock found predominantly in granitic pegmatites. It’s coarse intergrowths of feldspars display a Runic or Cuneiform configuration hence the term “graphic”
