A display specimen of a stilbite crystal bed from Pune, India. Stilbite is a well known mineral and part of the zeolite group, the specimens are easily identified due to their often tabular crystal habit, pink to white colouration and vitreous lustre. Its name is derived from the Greek word ‘stilbe’ meaning lustre. Today its industrial use is in that of refining petroleum, where it acts as a molecular sieve, enabling it to separate hydrocarbons. This piece has a pale pink colouration and displays a bed of thin tabular stilbite crystals, it measures approximately 14.5 x 10.5 x 5.5 cm at its widest points and weighs roughly 506 grams. Pyrrhotite mineral specimens from Evje, southern Norway, the samples are grey in colour and and have a metallic lustre which is very shiny when a fresh surface is exposed, however, these surfaces dull very quickly upon exposure to the air. Noticiably magnetic like magnetite, this iron sulphide mineral is fairly dense, was collected by staff from Norway and is available in a small size only. Supplied in a 2″ x 2″ card tray with a label.
