Torridonian sandstone thin section slide exhibiting a fine grained arenaceous nature. The Torridonian Sandstones date from the Pre-Cambrian & are amongst the oldest rocks to be found in the UK. The sandstones are a part of the Torridonian Supergroup which include arkoses, shales & conglomerates where they overlie the older Lewisian rocks. These sandstones are typically hard, coarse to fine grained and often show trough or planar cross bedding. Our thin section are typically fine grained, subarkosic i.e. contain 5 – 15 percent feldspar and grains are sub angular – sub rounded. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.

Estuarine sandstone thin section slide exhibiting a range of features characteristic of this diverse and complex depositional setting. The thin section supplements the hand specimens nicely and offers an opportunity to interpret the complex transportation and depositional process of this sediment, perfect for educational use.

Textbook desert sandstone microscope thin section ideal for educational use. These thin sections exhibit well rounded quartz clasts as you would expect from an aeolian transported sediment. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.

Specimens of Old Red Sandstone, collected from Gloucestershire in the UK. The Old Red Sandstone describes a suite of sedimentary rocks deposited in a variety of environments primarily during the Devonian period, but also extending back to the late Silurian, and on into the earliest parts of the Carboniferous. Alluvial sediments and conglomerates dominate at its base, then progresses to a combination of aeolian, lakes and river sediments. The familiar red colour of the rocks from the presence of Iron Oxide. These specimens are Lower Devonian in age, fine grained and pinkish red in colour. Available in multiple sizes, they come supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Old Red Sandstone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Specimens of Torridonian Sandstone, collected from Torridon, Scotland. These sandstones date from the Pre-Cambrian and are amongst the oldest rocks to be found in the UK. These rocks are part of the Torridonian Supergroup which includes arkoses, shales and conglomerates, and overlie the older Lewisian Rocks. These Torridonian Sandstones are typically hard, with a grain size that ranges from coarse to fine. They often display trough or planar cross bedding which suggests a palaeocurrent flowing from the North West out across large fan deltas. These rocks are dark red to brown in colour, indicating a partly arid (dry) depositional environment. These specimens are available in multiple sizes and come supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Torridonian Sandstone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Old red sandstone microscope slide exhibiting the well sorted nature of this particular sediment. Excellent to observe the nature of the minerals and interpret the history of the rock. The glass slide is 46 x 27 mm in size, suitable for enthusiasts, educational use and more, it will come in card sleeve with a label.

Red marl thin section slide taken from Lower Triassic strata belonging to the Mercia Mudstone Group, formerly known as the Keuper Marls. Marl describes rock which is a calcium carbonate rich i.e. 35% – 65% CaCO3 with the remainder being clay with varying amounts of silt

Rare eclogite thin section slides cut from our Norwegian eclogite hand specimens. Eclogite is a rare rock, composed of mainly two minerals, reddish-brown garnets and Omphacite (green pyroxene), our thin sections exhibit this clearly.

Microgranite thin section slide exhibiting the medium grained nature of this intrusive igneous rock. The crystals in microgranite are smaller than those of normal granite indicating that it cooled at a quicker rate.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Welded tuff thin section slide exhibiting a jumbled mass of irregularly sized broken clasts held in situ by finer ash particles which have become welded together. This material was collected from Cumbria, the original rock is likely rhyolite, and indeed in hand specimen the tuff almost still looks like rhyolite and appears to show a form of banding.

Oolitic limestone thin section slide exhibiting textbook ooid grains, some with a clear nucleus and concentric calcareous layers. These microscope slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and allow for a more detailed view of the ooid grains and an opportunity to intepret the diagenetic history of the rock.

Rhyolite thin section slide exhibiting the fine grained nature of this felsic igneous rock. The thin section shows a silica rich mineral assemblage of fine grained quartz and plagioclase. Accessory minerals present include biotite mica and hornblende. This material was collected from Cumbria, UK.

These thin sections exhibit beautiful crystals of olivine, pyroxene and augite, which often shows oscillatory zonation held within a matrix of plagioclase feldspar. The slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and are useful for interpreting the crystallisation history of the rock.

Obsidian, also known as ‘volcanic glass’ is a felsic, extrusive igneous rock. Crystal growth is minimal / absent within obsidian due to rapid solidification rates which inhibit crystal growth thus giving the rock a glassy appearance.

Norwegian gneiss thin section slide exhibiting a dominant felsic composition i.e. quartz and plagioclase with less prominent mafic bands. We collected this material from Evje, Norway. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Hornblende Gneiss thin section slide exhibiting an abundance of the mafic mineral hornblende, accompanied by less abundant biotite mica, quartz and feldspar. This material was collected by staff from Southern Norway. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.
