Pre-Cambrian Torridonian Sandstone from Loch Kishorn, Scotland. Among the oldest rocks to be found in the U.K. Named after the Torridon region of Scotland.
The Torridonian Sandstones date from the Pre-Cambrian & are amongst the oldest rocks to be found in the UK. The sandstones are a part of the Torridonian Supergroup which include arkoses, shales & conglomerates where they overlie the older Lewisian rocks. These sandstones are typically hard, coarse to fine grained with trough or planar cross bedding which suggests a palaeocurrent flowing from the North West out across large fan deltas. They are dark red to brown in colour indicating a partly arid depositional environment. Examples are supplied in labelled card trays.
