Travertine thin section slide. Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral rich springs, especially hot springs. It is formed by the rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate, often at the margins of a hot spring or in a limestone caves. It tends to be much more dense & compact than it’s porous counterpart, Tufa. The density and compact nature of this material is evident in the thin section view, no pores, lithic fragments or even other minerals present; it is a textbook chemical sedimentary rock. This particular material was collected in Yorkshire, UK. The thin section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.

Specimens of Tufa, collected from Caerys, North Wales. Tufa is a variety of limestone, which forms by the precipitation of carbonate minerals from ambient temperature water bodies. These specimens date to the Quaternary period, specifically, the Flandrian epoch. It forms in fluvial channels or lacustrine environments & subterranian passages (dripstone, stalagmites & stalactites). This rock specimen is a classic tufa, light in weight, spongy, and containing many plant, preserved in the rock. Specimens are available in multiple sizes and come in a white card tray with an information label.
We also supply Tufa thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Marble thin section microscope slide exhibiting and a high birefringence, twinning and an interlocking nature setting it apart from the sedimentary quartzite rocks which we also supply. The glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy, petrography & educational use.

Specimens of Travertine, collected from Yorkshire,UK. Travertine is a type of limestone which forms by the rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate, often at the margins of a hot spring or in limestone caves. It often has a fibrous or concentric banded appearance. Travertine is typically white or buff in colour, but can range through to orange and brown occasionally. It tends to be much denser and more compact than Tufa, and has notable uses as a decorative stone. Specimens are available in multiple sizes and come supplied in a white card tray with an information label.
We also supply Travertine thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Big feldspar gabbro thin section exhibiting exactly what its name describes, feldspar crystals much larger than those present in the ordinary gabbro which we supply. Characteristic twinning in the plagioclase and the bright colours of the pyroxene make for an attractive thin section, perfect for educational use.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Stunning peridotite thin section exhibiting the bright and beautiful colours of olivine and pyroxene punctuated by relatively abundant plagioclase. Peridotite is a dense, coarse grained, ultramafic igneous rock consisting largely of olivine and pyroxene.

Microgranite thin section slide exhibiting the medium grained nature of this intrusive igneous rock. The crystals in microgranite are smaller than those of normal granite indicating that it cooled at a quicker rate.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Rare eclogite thin section slides cut from our Norwegian eclogite hand specimens. Eclogite is a rare rock, composed of mainly two minerals, reddish-brown garnets and Omphacite (green pyroxene), our thin sections exhibit this clearly.

Granite adamellite thin section slide exhibiting crystals of quartz, biotite and feldspar. We collected this material from the famous Shap Fell quarry, in Cumbria hence the rocks alternative name ‘ Shap Granite ‘.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.
