Specimens of Aeolian Sandstone collected from Lazonby, near Penrith, Cumbria in the UK. This aeolian sandstone is Triassic in age – approximately 200 Ma. It belongs to the group of rocks known as the New Red Sandstone which date from the Permian (280 Ma) into the Triassic. The composition of this sandstone consists solely of spheroidal (millet seed) quartz grains with an iron oxide cement called haematite. It is the presence of this haematite that contributes to the distinct red – orange colouration of these samples. This lithology is typical of an aeolian (wind blown) hot desert environment. Available in multiple sizes, these specimens come supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Aeolian Sandstone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
Specimens of Millstone Grit, collected from Horwich, Bolton in the UK. Millstone Grit is part of the sandstone family and ranges from fine to very coarse grained. It is a feldspathic sandstone, interbedded with grey siltstones and mudstones, with subordinate marine shaly mudstone, claystone, coals and seatearths. It is Carboniferous (Namurian) in age and laid down in estuarine to tidal environments. Millstone Grit forms many prominent features throughout the north of England. These specimens are available in multiple sizes and come supplied in a white card tray with an information label.
We also supply Millstone Grit thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Specimens of Sandstone, collected from Philpots Quarry, West Sussex, in the UK. This sandstone is from the Wealden Group (Hastings sub-group), which dates it to the Lower Cretaceous. This makes these rocks approximately 110 million years old. This Cretaceous sandstone is yellow to buff in coloured, and particularly fine grained. It exhibits large scale cross bedding, which is indicative of fast flowing tidal currents. It is quite soft , friable and flaggy in places and so is extracted mainly for concreting and building sand. These specimens are available in multiple sizes and come supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Cretaceous Sandstone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Estuarine sandstone thin section slide exhibiting a range of features characteristic of this diverse and complex depositional setting. The thin section supplements the hand specimens nicely and offers an opportunity to interpret the complex transportation and depositional process of this sediment, perfect for educational use.

Specimens of Old Red Sandstone, collected from Gloucestershire in the UK. The Old Red Sandstone describes a suite of sedimentary rocks deposited in a variety of environments primarily during the Devonian period, but also extending back to the late Silurian, and on into the earliest parts of the Carboniferous. Alluvial sediments and conglomerates dominate at its base, then progresses to a combination of aeolian, lakes and river sediments. The familiar red colour of the rocks from the presence of Iron Oxide. These specimens are Lower Devonian in age, fine grained and pinkish red in colour. Available in multiple sizes, they come supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Old Red Sandstone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Accretionary lapilli tuff is an igneous pyroclastic rock, these samples come from Longsleddle, Cumbria in the UK and forms when hot ash and debris is ejected from as volcano. Some of this material is held together by moisture and once heavy enough, falls into the ash below forming small ‘spots’ within the material, creating a speckled rock. The samples are suitable both for young and serious collectors as well as educational use and are supplied in various sizes with a card tray and label.

Phonolite igneous rock specimens, an intrusive crystalline version of nepheline syenite, this rock lies between felsic and mafic composition, collected from Traprain Law, Soctland, the name of the rock is derived from the ancient Greek word which means ‘sounding stone’. Which alludes to the feature this rock has of emitting a metallic ringing when struck. Samples are available in various sizes and come supplied in a card tray with a label.

Specimens of Limestone, collected from Derbyshire. Limestone is a common, well known sedimentary rock. It consists of the calcium-rich shells, bones, and skeletons of the fauna that dominated during that period. It was laid down approximately 350 million years ago in semi tropical seas and comes from the Dinantian epoch of the Lower Carboniferous. This rock is very pure, about 98% soluble in rainwater (over time) leaving only residual clay. Its uses include aggregate, building stone, the manufacture of cement, paper & calcium carbide. Available in various sizes, each piece comes supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Limestone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Obsidian is an extrusive igneous rock, these specimens exhibit a typical black colouration with conchoidal fractures, they come from South East Mexico and are excellent for educational use and collectors due to the quality. This igneous rock forms when magma extrudes onto the earths surface, chemically it is silica rich and impurities give the black colouration. It’s fine crystalline texture and fracture makes obsidian appear glassy and it breaks as such. The pieces are available in various sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Obsidian thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
Gabbro igneous rock specimens from Balmedie quarry, Aberdeen, Scotland which exhibit a coars grained texture from the crystals. Formed as a mafic pluton intrusion, the samples contain pyroxenes such as augite along side plagioclase feldspar, amphibole and olivine crystals. They are derived from a body known as the Belhelvie basic intrusion which the parent unit being the Caledonian Supersuite. Samples exhibit a grey colouration and density and are suitable for the more serious or professional collector or higher educational use to differentiate similar looking igneous rocks with different compositions and origins. Available in three sizes, the specimens come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Gabbro thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Larvikite is an igneous plutonic rock and variant of monzonite from Larvik, Norway, due to its chemistry, it is composed mainly of orthoclase, albite and anorthite along with plagioclase which gives the rock a blue to silver shimmering effect. The igneous pluton formed during the Permian period, 292 – 298 million years ago during the the Variscan orogeny. A beautiful rock to observe due to its coarse crystalline texture and schiller effect, the samples are ideal for general interest, collectors and educational use with specimens being available in three sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Syenite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Essexite igneous rock specimens from Lanarkshire, Scotland, UK, also known as olivine or nepheline monzogabbro is an intrusive rock with mafic chemistry, composed of nepheline and plagioclase feldspar along with olivine, magnetite minerals as well as augite phenocrysts which exhibit euhedral crystal forms. The rock has a dense weight and overall dark colouration but attractive appearance. It is locally known as Crawfordjohns and was highly sought after as a high quality material to produce curling stones. These samples are excellent for young and older collectors as well as higher educational use, the pieces are available in three sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
