Marble with forsterite is a metamorphic rock which is composed of the mineral forsterite,which is a magnesium silicate, the pure variety of olivine. If water gets in as the rock cools, it breaks down to serpentine, which gives the yellow-green colour. This marble is derived from the metamorphosed Durness Limestone. Ordovician-Cambrian.These specimens are supplied in a white card tray with a label.

Larvikite is an igneous plutonic rock and variant of monzonite from Larvik, Norway, due to its chemistry, it is composed mainly of orthoclase, albite and anorthite along with plagioclase which gives the rock a blue to silver shimmering effect. The igneous pluton formed during the Permian period, 292 – 298 million years ago during the the Variscan orogeny. A beautiful rock to observe due to its coarse crystalline texture and schiller effect, the samples are ideal for general interest, collectors and educational use with specimens being available in three sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Essexite igneous rock specimens from Lanarkshire, Scotland, UK, also known as olivine or nepheline monzogabbro is an intrusive rock with mafic chemistry, composed of nepheline and plagioclase feldspar along with olivine, magnetite minerals as well as augite phenocrysts which exhibit euhedral crystal forms. The rock has a dense weight and overall dark colouration but attractive appearance. It is locally known as Crawfordjohns and was highly sought after as a high quality material to produce curling stones. Gabbro igneous rock specimens from Balmedie quarry, Aberdeen, Scotland which exhibit a coars grained texture from the crystals. Formed as a mafic pluton intrusion, the samples contain pyroxenes such as augite along side plagioclase feldspar, amphibole and olivine crystals. They are derived from a body known as the Belhelvie basic intrusion which the parent unit being the Caledonian Supersuite. Samples exhibit a grey colouration and density and are suitable for the more serious or professional collector or higher educational use to differentiate similar looking igneous rocks with different compositions and origins. Olivine dolerite igneous rock specimens from Clee Hill, Shropshire, UK, composed of pyroxene minerals such as augite and magnetite as well as plagioclase feldspar. Specimens of Aeolian Sandstone collected from Lazonby, near Penrith, Cumbria in the UK. This aeolian sandstone is Triassic in age – approximately 200 Ma. It belongs to the group of rocks known as the New Red Sandstone which date from the Permian (280 Ma) into the Triassic. The composition of this sandstone consists solely of spheroidal (millet seed) quartz grains with an iron oxide cement called haematite. It is the presence of this haematite that contributes to the distinct red – orange colouration of these samples. This lithology is typical of an aeolian (wind blown) hot desert environment. Available in multiple sizes, these specimens come supplied in a white card tray with information label.

Specimens of Limestone, collected from Derbyshire. Limestone is a common, well known sedimentary rock. It consists of the calcium-rich shells, bones, and skeletons of the fauna that dominated during that period. It was laid down approximately 350 million years ago in semi tropical seas and comes from the Dinantian epoch of the Lower Carboniferous. This rock is very pure, about 98% soluble in rainwater (over time) leaving only residual clay. Its uses include aggregate, building stone, the manufacture of cement, paper & calcium carbide. Graphic granite is an igneous pegmatite rock from Iveland, Norway, which forms in intrusive batholithic bodies that have a felsic composition. As such, the rock is mainly composed of quartz and orthoclase feldspar crystals and lacks any mica, making the rock leucocratic. These samples have what is known as a graphic texture, due to the formation of the crystals, which result in an appearance similar to that of cuneiform text which was once used by ancient human cultures.
