Microscope slides of Calcite from Morocco, these slides display the crystal structure of the mineral on a microscopic level which assists in the identification of this mineral in other slides.bCalcite is one of the polymorphs of calcium carbonate, the others being aragonite and vaterite. Calcite is one of the index minerals in the Mohs scale at number 3, as it is a fairly soft mineral, able to be scratched by your finger nail. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy & educational use.

Orange calcite mineral specimens from Mexico, exhibiting a rich orange colour and crystalline texture, this soft mineral hovers at 3 on the Mohs scale of hardness. The colouration is due to the inclusion of hematite, an iron mineral (well known for being deep red) which in certain quantities, will give calcite the orange appearance. It is ideal for enthusiasts and collectors due to its striking colour but also for educational use to exhibit how calcite crystals can vary as well as colour and to enforce to students how mineral impurities can lead to said colouration. We have various sizes of this mineral available, each piece will come supplies in a card tray with an information label.

Calcite rhomb mineral specimens exhibiting excellent rhomic crystal form expected of calcite, the pieces come from Morocco and as expected, will fizz, bubble and release CO2 if the hydrochloric acid test is performed. They are available in 2 colours and will be supplied in a card tray with an information label.
Specimens of Blue Calcite, collected from Mexico. Calcite is a common mineral with a variety of potential forms and colours, notable for its relatively low hardness of 3 on Mohs Scale. These specimens exhibit a pale blue – grey colour. They are available in multiple sizes and come in a white card tray with an information label.

Specimens of Honey Calcite, collected from Mexico. This is a variation of the mineral calcite which exhibits a translucent yellow orange colour and crystalline habit. Calcite is a relatively soft mineral, measuring a 3 on Mohs scale of hardness. Specimens are available in multiple sizes and comes in a white card tray with an information label.
Granite adamellite thin section slide exhibiting crystals of quartz, biotite and feldspar. We collected this material from the famous Shap Fell quarry, in Cumbria hence the rocks alternative name ‘ Shap Granite ‘.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Glaucophane Schist thin section microscope slide exhibiting a clear fabric and a wonderful blue hue under plane polarised light. This material was collected from the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Travertine thin section slide. Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral rich springs, especially hot springs. It is formed by the rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate, often at the margins of a hot spring or in a limestone caves.

Metaquartzite thin section slide exhibiting a fine, interlocking mosaic of quartz crystals characteristic of this metamorphic rock. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes. This material was collected near Holyhead on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales.

Hornblende Gneiss thin section slide exhibiting an abundance of the mafic mineral hornblende, accompanied by less abundant biotite mica, quartz and feldspar. This material was collected by staff from Southern Norway. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Lignite thin section slide. Lignite coal and indeed all other varieties of coal are classed as organic sedimentary rocks. It has a high carbon content 25 – 35% & a moisture content up to 66%. The high volatile component of lignite is clearly reflected in the thin section view, particularly when compared with those of higher grade coals.

Cordierite Hornfels thin section microscope slide exhibiting a dark colour and a characteristic none crystalline form. Fine grains fit together like the fragments of a mosaic, this is often referred to as rough pavement or pavement structure. Larger crystals of cordierite can be seen scattered throughout the fine matrix.

Diorite thin section slide. Diorite is a grey to dark-grey intermediate intrusive igneous rock composed principally of plagioclase feldspar (typically andesine), biotite mica, hornblende, and/or pyroxene. This particular material was collected in Cumbria.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Rhyolite thin section slide exhibiting the fine grained nature of this felsic igneous rock. The thin section shows a silica rich mineral assemblage of fine grained quartz and plagioclase. Accessory minerals present include biotite mica and hornblende. This material was collected from Cumbria, UK.

Pumice thin section slide exhibiting the highly vesicular nature of this extrusive igneous rock. Pumice lavas tend to be silicic or felsic which are highly viscous thus do not allow the gas bubbles to escape efficiently. This material was collected from the Lipari islands of Italy.

Torridonian sandstone thin section slide exhibiting a fine grained arenaceous nature. The Torridonian Sandstones date from the Pre-Cambrian & are amongst the oldest rocks to be found in the UK. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip.

Oolitic limestone thin section slide exhibiting textbook ooid grains, some with a clear nucleus and concentric calcareous layers. These microscope slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and allow for a more detailed view of the ooid grains and an opportunity to intepret the diagenetic history of the rock.
