Stilbite is a well known mineral and part of the zeolite group, the specimens are easily identified due to their often tabular crystal habit, pink colouration and vitreous lustre which makes the minerals surface appear wet. Its name is derived from the Greek word ‘stilbe’ meaning lustre and these excellent specimens come from the famous locality of Pune (formally known as Poona), a district in Maharastra, India. today its industrial use is in that of refining petroleum, where it acts as a molecular sieve, enabling it to separate hydrocarbons. We can offer these samples in various sizes and each pieces will come supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Amygdaloidal basalt is an igneous rock which is extrusive in nature, these specimens formed over 60 million years ago during the Tertiary period and come from Ireland. They are part of the Antrim lava group and exhibit a dark colouration with occurrences of amygdales containing quartz and calcite crystals. As a basalt they are somewhat dense, but lighter than pure samples due to the cavities within them which formed as a result of gaseous activity during their ejection. Over time, hydrothermal fluids pass through the rock and minerals form within the cavities, which gives the usually dark coloured rock a speckled appearance. These samples are available in various sizes and are suitable for higher educational use to detail the subtle differences between similar igneous rocks, they come supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Specimens of Aeolian Sandstone collected from Lazonby, near Penrith, Cumbria in the UK. This aeolian sandstone is Triassic in age – approximately 200 Ma. It belongs to the group of rocks known as the New Red Sandstone which date from the Permian (280 Ma) into the Triassic. The composition of this sandstone consists solely of spheroidal (millet seed) quartz grains with an iron oxide cement called haematite. It is the presence of this haematite that contributes to the distinct red – orange colouration of these samples. This lithology is typical of an aeolian (wind blown) hot desert environment. Available in multiple sizes, these specimens come supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Aeolian Sandstone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
Desert rose mineral specimens composed from gypsum found in Tunisia, the samples are composed of numerous crystals which resemble ‘petals’ which are randomly orientated, thus giving them a rose flower effect. Specimens are supplied in a 1.5″ x 1.5″ card tray or as approximately 1 cm diameter pieces in 1″ magnifier boxes with an information label.
