Chert microscope slide exhibiting the interlocking crystals of quartz characteristic of this silica rich microcrystalline, cryptocrystalline sedimentary rock. The crystals are relatively large in this Foss Mine ( Scotland ) variety of chert and individual crystals of quartz can easily be distinguished in XPL view. Chert can occur as a primary deposit however it frequently occurs as a replacement mineral during diagenesis e.g. Flint nodules in Chalk. The section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.

Metaquartzite thin section slide exhibiting a fine, interlocking mosaic of quartz crystals characteristic of this metamorphic rock. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes. This material was collected near Holyhead on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales.

Chert is classified as a sedimentary rock and is a hard cryptocrystalline form of silica. It is found as nodules and bands within the Cretaceous Chalk, with these samples coming from Norfolk in the UK. It is well known for its glassy crystalline texture which allows pieces to be knapped and for this, the rock was used by stone age humans to make various cutting tools and weapons as it often break, leaving sharp edges. The specimens exhibit an earthy brown colour with a waxy lustre and are available in various sizes, which will come supplied in a card tray with an information label.

These thin sections exhibit beautiful crystals of olivine, pyroxene and augite, which often shows oscillatory zonation held within a matrix of plagioclase feldspar. The slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and are useful for interpreting the crystallisation history of the rock.

Amygdaloidal basalt thin section slide exhibiting amygdaloids of varying sizes within a fine grained basaltic ground mass. This particular material was collected from the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy.

Cretaceous sandstone thin section slide exhibiting the well sorted, fine and rounded nature of this arenaceous sandstone. The slides are 30 microns thick and measure 46 x 27 mm in size and have a cover slip of the section along with a protective cardboard sleeve.

Garnet Mica Schist thin section exhibiting textbook strain fabric and alignment of platy minerals within this popular metamorphic rock. This schist is from the Dalradian series, a complicated group of various metamorphic rocks which are dated to the Pre-Cambrian period and is present in both Scotland and Ireland.

Microgranite thin section slide exhibiting the medium grained nature of this intrusive igneous rock. The crystals in microgranite are smaller than those of normal granite indicating that it cooled at a quicker rate.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Rare eclogite thin section slides cut from our Norwegian eclogite hand specimens. Eclogite is a rare rock, composed of mainly two minerals, reddish-brown garnets and Omphacite (green pyroxene), our thin sections exhibit this clearly.

Bytownite basalt thin section slide exhibiting phenocryts of bytownite feldspar within a fine basaltic groundmass. These thin sections depict beautifully a textbook porphyritic texture. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size.

Big feldspar gabbro thin section exhibiting exactly what its name describes, feldspar crystals much larger than those present in the ordinary gabbro which we supply. Characteristic twinning in the plagioclase and the bright colours of the pyroxene make for an attractive thin section, perfect for educational use.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Granite adamellite thin section slide exhibiting crystals of quartz, biotite and feldspar. We collected this material from the famous Shap Fell quarry, in Cumbria hence the rocks alternative name ‘ Shap Granite ‘.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Oolitic limestone thin section slide exhibiting textbook ooid grains, some with a clear nucleus and concentric calcareous layers. These microscope slides supplement the hand specimens nicely and allow for a more detailed view of the ooid grains and an opportunity to intepret the diagenetic history of the rock.

Norwegian gneiss thin section slide exhibiting a dominant felsic composition i.e. quartz and plagioclase with less prominent mafic bands. We collected this material from Evje, Norway. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.

Obsidian, also known as ‘volcanic glass’ is a felsic, extrusive igneous rock. Crystal growth is minimal / absent within obsidian due to rapid solidification rates which inhibit crystal growth thus giving the rock a glassy appearance.
