Eclogite is an uncommon rock. It typically results from the high pressure metamorphism of mafic igneous rock such as basalt & gabbros at depths of 50km or more in the mantle or lower crust. It is composed of mainly two minerals, reddish-brown Almandine Pyrope garnet and the green sodium rich pyroxene Omphacite Other minerals, such as kyanite may also be present. Isotope dating of the Norwegian eclogites in the 1970s & 1980sindicates they are Early Palaeozoic (450-400 million years) and this suggests they formed during the Caledonian orogeny.
Studies have shown that western Norway had been dragged down to great depths beneath a thick pile of nappes that was building up as the mountain chain formed.
The discovery, about ten years ago, of micro-diamonds in eclogites was remarkable. They were too small to be seen with the naked eye, however, don’t expect one in your samples. These examples come from Almenning, Norway. Specimens are supplied in a polythene bag in lots of 1 kg with a label.

Olivine dolerite igneous rock specimens from Clee Hill, Shropshire, UK, composed of pyroxene minerals such as augite and magnetite as well as plagioclase feldspar. The samples are fine grained and crystalline in texture with a dense weight and black colouration. Similar in appearance to gabbro and basalt, the rock samples are suitable for serious collectors or higher level education to explain the difference in chemistry and mineralogy of igneous rocks. Dunite igneous rock specimens from the Gusdal olivine pit in Åheim, southern Norway. Composed of green olivine minerals with chromite and pyroxene crystals, the rock forms as intrusive igneous plutons in the earth mantle down to 400 km deep and displays a coarse texture and green colouration. Overall, the samples are fairly granular and weak due to their chemistry and form part of the basal gneiss complex of southern Norway. Ideal for various levels of collectors and for higher level education and research use, the samples are available in three sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Garnet peridotite igneous rock specimens found in the Gusdal Olivine Pit, Åheim, Norway is an ultra mafic rock which contains high pressure and temperature minerals such as olivine and garnet crystals. Exhibiting a green colouraiton with striking red spots, these samples were pushed up to the earths crust during the Caledonian orogeny during the Ordovician and Devonian period over 400 million years ago. The specimens are dense as expected and are ideal for children and serious collectors because of the colourful appearance as well as for higher educational use to describe deep mantle material as well as orogenic processes. The hand samples are available in various sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Specimens of Limestone, collected from Derbyshire. Limestone is a common, well known sedimentary rock. It consists of the calcium-rich shells, bones, and skeletons of the fauna that dominated during that period. It was laid down approximately 350 million years ago in semi tropical seas and comes from the Dinantian epoch of the Lower Carboniferous. This rock is very pure, about 98% soluble in rainwater (over time) leaving only residual clay. Its uses include aggregate, building stone, the manufacture of cement, paper & calcium carbide. Available in various sizes, each piece comes supplied in a white card tray with information label.

Specimens of Puddingstone, collected from Hertfordshire, UK. Puddingstone is a variation of conglomerate, which is term used to describe a coarse grained sedimentary rock, featuring large, well rounded clasts in a finer grained matrix. It dates back to the Paleocene to Eocene period around 56 millions years ago. This particular rock is composed almost entirely of silica and has no porosity, likely contributing to its notorious hardness. This rare rock is only found in quantity at one locality in Hertfordshire. As such, it is becoming exceedingly difficult to obtain. This rock is available in multiple sizes and each piece comes supplied in a white card tray with information label.
Syenite thin section slide. The thin sections show a dominant feldspar mass ( orthoclase ) with occurrences of hornblende, amphibole and clinopyroxene. Biotite mica may also be present however its occurrence is rare, The thin section is supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.
