Kaolinite is a well known clay mineral, it is very soft and exhibits and earthy texture. Mostly white or a pale grey, it leaves a white streak and can easily be pulled apart by ones hands. The name is derived from the word ‘kaolin’, which is in turn derived from ‘Gaoling’, an ancient Chinese word which means High Ridge, a village near Jingdezhen in southeastern China’s Jiangxi Province. It is formed from weathered rocks on the surface from the breakdown of feldspar minerals and has been apartof human history for many years. It is used in the manufacture of high quality porcelain (China) as well as being an ingredient in toothpaste, paint, cosmetics and predominantly in coating certain grades of paper (e.g. gloss). These samples of kaolinite come from Cornwall in the UK, a well known locality and are available in 2 sizes, samples will come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
