Epidote mineral specimens from Scotland, unlike our Madagascan and Iranian specimens, this material from Scotland is a massive variety of epidote and is alongside feldspar. The feldspar is derived from Lewisian gneiss in the region and the epidote occurs as layers (a band) within the gneiss. Therefore, some specimens supplied may not look like a complete piece of epidote, but rather a layer on the surface of feldspar or gneiss. The mineral was named in 1801 by René Just Haüy, a prominent French mineralogist and founder of the Musée de Minéralogie in Paris, France. The name is derived from the Greek word Epidosis, which mean “increase” in reference to the crystal characteristic of one longer side at the base of the prism. None the less, they will an excellent mineral specimen to add to any serious collection, especially those interested in Scottish minerals. These samples were collected from Scotland and are supplied in a white card tray with an information label.
