Big Feldspar Gabbro, is similar in composition to classic Gabbro specimens one can find any where in igneous regions. Like gabbro, it forms in plutonic environments, however, due to a slower, cooler temperature at the time of crystallization. The minerals in this particular gabbro are very coarse and can easily be seen with the naked eye, giving the rock a speckled grey, black and white colour. These samples of Big Feldspar gabbro come from Carrock Fell, Cumbria and are supplied in a card tray with a label. We can also supply cut and lacquered specimens, these are the same rock, however, one side has been cut and the sprayed with lacquer giving it a smooth surface, allowing you to see the texture better, making it suitable for educational use.

Big feldspar gabbro thin section exhibiting exactly what its name describes, feldspar crystals much larger than those present in the ordinary gabbro which we supply. Characteristic twinning in the plagioclase and the bright colours of the pyroxene make for an attractive thin section, perfect for educational use.
We provide a full range of igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and mineral thin sections. Click here to view them. Should you require a microscope, they can be found here.

Classic Gabbro specimens, showing typical coarse grained crystalline texture. Gabbro is an intrusive mafic igneous rock chemically similar to basalt.

Amygdaloidal basalt is an igneous rock which is extrusive in nature, these specimens formed over 60 million years ago during the Tertiary period and come from Ireland. They are part of the Antrim lava group and exhibit a dark colouration with occurrences of amygdales containing quartz and calcite crystals. As a basalt they are somewhat dense, but lighter than pure samples due to the cavities within them which formed as a result of gaseous activity during their ejection. Over time, hydrothermal fluids pass through the rock and minerals form within the cavities, which gives the usually dark coloured rock a speckled appearance. These samples are available in various sizes and are suitable for higher educational use to detail the subtle differences between similar igneous rocks, they come supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Rhyolite Felsite, a highly felsitic composed variation of Rhyolite, found in Fife, Scotland, an extrusive igneous rock composed of sodium, quartz and feldspar, thus often having a pale white to pink colouration. Available in various sizes and supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Rhyolite specimens found in Cumbria. Rhyolite is a felsic (silica rich) rock, often formed in highly explosive volcanoes. Specimens are supplied in a card tray with label.
We also supply Rhyolite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Shap granite igneous rock specimens from Shap Fell, Cumbria, UK which exhibit typical coarse grained crystalline textures expected of intrusive felsic rocks, being composed of quartz, plagioclase and orthoclase feldspar and biotite mica. This popular granite is very sought after for a variety of applications and has a colourful appearance. It is believed to have formed during the early Devonian period as a plutonic intrusion in the area and is quarried extensively. Samples are ideal for collectors of all levels and ages as well as all educational levels as the minerals can be easily described with the origin and processes being suitable to teach higher level students. Samples are available in three sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Shap Granite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
Accretionary lapilli tuff is an igneous pyroclastic rock, these samples come from Longsleddle, Cumbria in the UK and forms when hot ash and debris is ejected from as volcano. Some of this material is held together by moisture and once heavy enough, falls into the ash below forming small ‘spots’ within the material, creating a speckled rock. The samples are suitable both for young and serious collectors as well as educational use and are supplied in various sizes with a card tray and label.

Greisen metamorphic rock specimens from Caldbeck Fells, Cumbria, composed mainly of quartz and mica with an off yellow colouration. The rock is known as an endoskarn and forms when hydrothermal fluid and heat alter a granitic body, resulting a heavily altered rock which may contain trace amounts of rare elements. These samples are suitable for advanced collectors and higher level education and are available in three sizes, each pieces will come supplied in a card tray with a label.
We also supply Greisen thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Micro Granite is a variation of the granite group of rocks, composed of the minerals quartz, feldspar and mica. These particular samples were collected from Threlkeld quarry, Cumbria, UK. They are supplied in a small white tray with an information label.
We also supply Microgranite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Phonolite igneous rock specimens, an intrusive crystalline version of nepheline syenite, this rock lies between felsic and mafic composition, collected from Traprain Law, Soctland, the name of the rock is derived from the ancient Greek word which means ‘sounding stone’. Which alludes to the feature this rock has of emitting a metallic ringing when struck. Samples are available in various sizes and come supplied in a card tray with a label.

Essexite igneous rock specimens from Lanarkshire, Scotland, UK, also known as olivine or nepheline monzogabbro is an intrusive rock with mafic chemistry, composed of nepheline and plagioclase feldspar along with olivine, magnetite minerals as well as augite phenocrysts which exhibit euhedral crystal forms. The rock has a dense weight and overall dark colouration but attractive appearance. It is locally known as Crawfordjohns and was highly sought after as a high quality material to produce curling stones. These samples are excellent for young and older collectors as well as higher educational use, the pieces are available in three sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Essexite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Olivine dolerite igneous rock specimens from Clee Hill, Shropshire, UK, composed of pyroxene minerals such as augite and magnetite as well as plagioclase feldspar. The samples are fine grained and crystalline in texture with a dense weight and black colouration. Similar in appearance to gabbro and basalt, the rock samples are suitable for serious collectors or higher level education to explain the difference in chemistry and mineralogy of igneous rocks. The samples are available in three sizes and supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Olivine Dolerite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
