Specimens of Orbicular Rhyolite, also sometimes referred to as Leopardskin Jasper, obtained from Peru. Similarly to regular rhyolite, these specimens are extrusive, fine grained, felsic, igneous rocks. Rhyolites are a variety of quartz porphyry containing small quartz phenocrysts in a groundmass of quartz, othoclase, mica and albite. What distinguishes the orbicular variety, is its characteristic spotted appearance that forms due to staining by iron and manganese hydroxides. This unique design makes orbicular rhyolite a very intriguing and appealing piece to collectors, whilst its method of formation makes it ideal for educational purposes. Whilst these pieces are naturally interesting, they polish up incredibly well, better bringing out the colours of the orbicules. These specimens are available in a range of sizes and come supplied in a white card tray with information label.
