Pyrite is a well known and common mineral found all over the world, it is commonly known as fools gold, a name possibly derived from the fact that many gold prospectors would mistake it for gold due to it’s metallic lustre and brassy colour. It is an iron mineral and fairly dense and is so named from the Greek word ‘pyritēs’ which means ‘in fire’ or ‘to fire’ which is a reference to the fact that it was historically noted for created sparks when struck by metal. It is often found in quartz veins or other rocks and is a common mineral and likely one that most people will come across in their childhood at some point. It has a cubic crystal form and is fairly brittle. These particular specimens come from Morocco and are of low grade, so most suitable for educational use or as gifts for children. In the modern age, it’s main uses are in production of various metals, in batteries and in the manufacture of paper. Our specimens are available in various sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
