Quartz monzonite is an intrusive igneous rock which is felsic in classification. It is suggested that monzonites have an equal proportion of the two major feldspar minerals, orthoclase and plagioclase and is generally a coarse grain texture rock. As the name suggests, quartz is also present in large quantities as well as dark minerals often associated with igneous activity such as biotite and hornblende. Similar in composition to granites, the levels of quartz differentiate this rock from the granitic group, where a rock has above 20% of quatrtz, it is classified as a granite, between 5% – 20% and it is classified as a monzonite. These particular rock specimens come from Ratagan, Glen Shiel, Scotland and is available in various sizes to choose from, each piece is supplied in a card tray with an information label.

The metamorphic rock texture card is made for earth science students, it displays numerous bites of information on how to determine an metamorphic rock specimen found in the field via their observable features. The cards have been laminated, making them waterproof, small, the size of a bank card and an excellent to hand guide for students, amateurs and professionals.
An off white coloured streak plate made form porcelain, they are used by field geologists and students as a means of performing streak tests on minerals. This test simply involves one, scratching the surface of the tile with a particular rock or mineral, the coloured streak left behind then assists the user in determining the mineral, or minerals within a rock sample.
Augite andesite igneous rock specimens from Thirlmere, Cumbria, UK which are of late Ordovician age which form part of the Barrowdale volcanic group. The samples are of intermediate composition and contain phenocrysts of the pyroxene mineral, augite, giving the normally dark blue rock a black speckled appearance. The samples are available in 3 sizes and come supplied in a card tray with a label.

Larvikite is an igneous plutonic rock and variant of monzonite from Larvik, Norway, due to its chemistry, it is composed mainly of orthoclase, albite and anorthite along with plagioclase which gives the rock a blue to silver shimmering effect. The igneous pluton formed during the Permian period, 292 – 298 million years ago during the the Variscan orogeny. A beautiful rock to observe due to its coarse crystalline texture and schiller effect, the samples are ideal for general interest, collectors and educational use with specimens being available in three sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Syenite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
