Eclogite is an uncommon metamorphic rock. It typically forms from the high pressure metamorphism of mafic igneous rock such as basalt and gabbros at depths of 50km or more in the mantle or lower crust. It is composed of mainly two minerals, reddish-brown almandine or pyrope garnet crystals and the green sodium rich pyroxene omphacite. Other minerals, such as blue kyanite and white quartz may also be present. Isotope dating of the Norwegian eclogites in the 1970’s and 1980’s indicates they are early Palaeozoic (450-400 million years old) in age and this suggests they formed during the Caledonian orogeny, which formed the majority of the mountains in northern Britain and Scandnavia.
Studies have shown that western Norway had been dragged down to great depths beneath a thick pile of nappes that was building up as the mountain chain formed. The discovery, about ten years ago, of micro-diamonds in eclogites was remarkable and further proved high pressure and depths at which the rocks formed. They are too small to be seen with the naked eye, however, don’t expect one in your sample. Garnet peridotite igneous rock specimens found in the Gusdal Olivine Pit, Åheim, Norway is an ultra mafic rock which contains high pressure and temperature minerals such as olivine and garnet crystals. Exhibiting a green colouraiton with striking red spots, these samples were pushed up to the earths crust during the Caledonian orogeny during the Ordovician and Devonian period over 400 million years ago. The specimens are dense as expected and are ideal for children and serious collectors because of the colourful appearance as well as for higher educational use to describe deep mantle material as well as orogenic processes. Bytownite basalt ( Bytownite feldspar) is another variation of the common Basalt rock. Basalt tends to to be a dark, fine, crystalline igneous rock and has a number of different variations. Bytownite feldspar is a calcium rich member of the Plagioclase family. The mineral was first described in 1835 & named for Bytown (now Ottowa) where it was found in Canada. High quality transparent examples are used to make faceted stone in the jewelllery trade. In these examples the phenocrysts are green & opaque & set in a basalt matrix. Obsidian is an extrusive igneous rock, these specimens exhibit a typical black colouration with conchoidal fractures, they come from South East Mexico and are excellent for educational use and collectors due to the quality. This igneous rock forms when magma extrudes onto the earths surface, chemically it is silica rich and impurities give the black colouration. It’s fine crystalline texture and fracture makes obsidian appear glassy and it breaks as such. The pieces are available in various sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Specimens of Puddingstone, collected from Hertfordshire, UK. Puddingstone is a variation of conglomerate, which is term used to describe a coarse grained sedimentary rock, featuring large, well rounded clasts in a finer grained matrix. It dates back to the Paleocene to Eocene period around 56 millions years ago. This particular rock is composed almost entirely of silica and has no porosity, likely contributing to its notorious hardness. This rare rock is only found in quantity at one locality in Hertfordshire. As such, it is becoming exceedingly difficult to obtain. This rock is available in multiple sizes and each piece comes supplied in a white card tray with information label.
Diorite rock specimens from Cockermouth, Cumbria, is an intrusive igneous rock from the Ordovician period with a coarse, phaneratic texture composed of plagioclase feldspar, biotite mica as well as hornblende with intermediate chemistry. Found with the Skiddaw group, the rock samples are more suited for serious collectors and higher level education to describe the chemistry and mineralogy of various igneous groups. Specimens of Aeolian Sandstone collected from Lazonby, near Penrith, Cumbria in the UK. This aeolian sandstone is Triassic in age – approximately 200 Ma. It belongs to the group of rocks known as the New Red Sandstone which date from the Permian (280 Ma) into the Triassic. The composition of this sandstone consists solely of spheroidal (millet seed) quartz grains with an iron oxide cement called haematite. It is the presence of this haematite that contributes to the distinct red – orange colouration of these samples. This lithology is typical of an aeolian (wind blown) hot desert environment. Available in multiple sizes, these specimens come supplied in a white card tray with information label.

Graphic granite is an igneous pegmatite rock from Iveland, Norway, which forms in intrusive batholithic bodies that have a felsic composition. As such, the rock is mainly composed of quartz and orthoclase feldspar crystals and lacks any mica, making the rock leucocratic. These samples have what is known as a graphic texture, due to the formation of the crystals, which result in an appearance similar to that of cuneiform text which was once used by ancient human cultures.
