Garnet mica schist is a variation of mica schist, a metamorphic rock formed by medium grade metamorphism which is usually a combination of both heat and pressure applied to the original rock, often a clay, mud or shale. These rock specimens, like our standard mica schist samples from Scotland are composed mainly of muscovite mica, with minor occurrences of quartz and feldspar, however, these specimens also exhibit the presence of numerous garnet crystals, which can be seen as red dots on the rock. These garnets are known as porphyroblasts, and suggest that the environment of formation was at or in close proximity to a convergent plate boundary with medium grade regional metamorphism taking place. The garnets are stronger than the muscovite crystals and so in some instances, it will appear as though the garnets are pushing the mica crystals around it, this can be seen much more easily in the cut and lacquered specimens if preferred. These rocks come from Loch Tay, a region in Scotland and are available in various sizes and as a 3 inch size piece with a cut and lacquered face to detail the crystal structure inside. Specimens will be supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Rhodolite garnets in quartz and mica schist matrix from Southern Norway exhibiting bright vibrant pink coloured garnets in a white quartz and metallic grey mica schist with a start contrast of colours, these minerals specimens are available in 3 sizes and come supplied in a card tray with a label.
Glaucophane Schist is also known as Blueschist. The blue-green colour comes from the dominant presence of the minerals Glaucophane (amphibole) & Lawsonite (related to epidote). These specimens were collected from the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales.
We also supply Glaucophane Schist thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Dalradian mica schist is a famous metamorphic rock, composed mostly of the minerals muscovite mica with occurrences of quartz and feldspar, these rock specimens are Pre-Cambrian in age and come from Scotland, supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Mica Schist thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Samples of graphitic schist from the Pre-Cambrian Dalradian formation, making them among the oldest rocks in the country. The samples come from the Ben Eagach schist formation at Foss mine, Scotland, UK and were collected by our own members of staff. The rock contains mica and graphite, which gives the specimens their unique mica appearance and greasy graphitic texture and lustre.

Specimens of Limestone, collected from Derbyshire. Limestone is a common, well known sedimentary rock. It consists of the calcium-rich shells, bones, and skeletons of the fauna that dominated during that period. It was laid down approximately 350 million years ago in semi tropical seas and comes from the Dinantian epoch of the Lower Carboniferous. This rock is very pure, about 98% soluble in rainwater (over time) leaving only residual clay. Its uses include aggregate, building stone, the manufacture of cement, paper & calcium carbide. Available in various sizes, each piece comes supplied in a white card tray with information label.
We also supply Limestone thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Graphic granite is an igneous pegmatite rock from Iveland, Norway, which forms in intrusive batholithic bodies that have a felsic composition. As such, the rock is mainly composed of quartz and orthoclase feldspar crystals and lacks any mica, making the rock leucocratic. These samples have what is known as a graphic texture, due to the formation of the crystals, which result in an appearance similar to that of cuneiform text which was once used by ancient human cultures. A brightly coloured, eye catching rock, the samples are suitable for collectors and educational use at higher levels and come available in three sizes. Each specimens is supplied in a card tray with an information label.

Ignimbirte welded tuff is a pyroclastic rock of any origin formed through volcanic processes, the rock appears to show streaks of welded material on some surfaces and appears to be rhyolitic on the inside. Specimens come from Cumbria and are available in various sizes.
We also supply Welded Tuff thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Snowflake obsidian is quite striking in appearance. It is characterised by the inclusion of radially clustered crystals of cristobalite, which when viewed at a glance, appear like snowflakes on the surface of the rock. These crystal clusters are set in an otherwise black vitreous matrix of obsidian, which is an naturally occurring volcanic glass, even exhibiting a conchoidal fracture. Cristobalite is a high temperature polymorph of silica, it can form as a result of the devitrification of the obsidian. These specimens come from Java, Indonesia and are supplied in card trays, sizes which are optional, each tray also has a small data label supplied.
We also supply Snowflake Obsidian thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.
This granite pegmatite contains large sheets of muscovite mica, orthoclase feldspar and quartz matrix. An excellent teaching material which comes from Southern Norway. Each specimen comes in a labelled card tray.

Mahogany obsidian sourced from the United States of America. Impurities of magnesium and iron give this variety a red or brown appearance hence the name ‘mahogany obsidian’ or oak obsidian. Each Sample is supplied in a labelled card tray.

Biotite muscovite granite specimens from St. Austell in Cornwall, UK of Permian age is a coarse grained igneous rock composed of quartz, plagioclase feldspar, biotite and muscovite. The rock is part of the St. Austell pluton which formed 280 million years ago. An off white colour with gold and black flecks of micas, the rock has a unique chemistry and resulted in the rich mineralisation of ores in the area. The samples are suitable for collectors and educational use to show granite variants, available in three sizes. Each piece will come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Biotite Muscovite Granite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Essexite igneous rock specimens from Lanarkshire, Scotland, UK, also known as olivine or nepheline monzogabbro is an intrusive rock with mafic chemistry, composed of nepheline and plagioclase feldspar along with olivine, magnetite minerals as well as augite phenocrysts which exhibit euhedral crystal forms. The rock has a dense weight and overall dark colouration but attractive appearance. It is locally known as Crawfordjohns and was highly sought after as a high quality material to produce curling stones. These samples are excellent for young and older collectors as well as higher educational use, the pieces are available in three sizes and come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Essexite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Olivine dolerite igneous rock specimens from Clee Hill, Shropshire, UK, composed of pyroxene minerals such as augite and magnetite as well as plagioclase feldspar. The samples are fine grained and crystalline in texture with a dense weight and black colouration. Similar in appearance to gabbro and basalt, the rock samples are suitable for serious collectors or higher level education to explain the difference in chemistry and mineralogy of igneous rocks. The samples are available in three sizes and supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Olivine Dolerite thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Gabbro igneous rock specimens from Balmedie quarry, Aberdeen, Scotland which exhibit a coars grained texture from the crystals. Formed as a mafic pluton intrusion, the samples contain pyroxenes such as augite along side plagioclase feldspar, amphibole and olivine crystals. They are derived from a body known as the Belhelvie basic intrusion which the parent unit being the Caledonian Supersuite. Samples exhibit a grey colouration and density and are suitable for the more serious or professional collector or higher educational use to differentiate similar looking igneous rocks with different compositions and origins. Available in three sizes, the specimens come supplied in a card tray with an information label.
We also supply Gabbro thin sections for microscope study which are available to buy HERE.

Accretionary lapilli tuff is an igneous pyroclastic rock, these samples come from Longsleddle, Cumbria in the UK and forms when hot ash and debris is ejected from as volcano. Some of this material is held together by moisture and once heavy enough, falls into the ash below forming small ‘spots’ within the material, creating a speckled rock. The samples are suitable both for young and serious collectors as well as educational use and are supplied in various sizes with a card tray and label.
