Desert rose is the name given to a variety of gypsum crystal clusters which form close together, resembling a rose flower like formation. There mineral specimens form in arid (dry, desert) environments in salt basins, where the water evaporates and the saline minerals are left behind. They tend to have a sandy texture due to the surrounding sand in the environment, which also incorporates into the structure. they can form as small single rose clusters such as these samples, which measure approximately 1.5 by 1.5 inches to large groups weighing many kilos. They are highly sought after not just for the geological uniqueness, but also for their appearance by those who may not hold any interest in geology or earth science, specimens are supplied in a 1.5″ x 1.5″ card tray or as approximately 1 cm diameter pieces in 1″ magnifier boxes with an information label.
