Cut and polished ammonite pairs, collected from Madagascar. Ammonites are one of the most distinctive and popular fossils in the world due to their distinctive spiral shell. These specimens are examples of their shells that have been cut and polished in order to show their inner workings. These specimens include both Desmoceras and Cleoniceras which both lived during the Lower Cretaceous period, approximately 110 – 102 million years ago. Each section measures approximately 3cm and come packaged as a pair in a polythene bag with information label.
Stunning Cleoniceras ammonite specimens from Madagascar. These specimens have been polished helping to display their stunning suture lines which are highly visible on these ammonites. Cleoniceras is an extinct species of ammonite, dating to the lower Cretaceous period, over 102 million years ago. These specimens are available in three different sizes, and make a fantastic addition to any collection, whilst also being fantastic educational specimens on account of clearly showing the complex suture line of ammonites.

Amygdaloidal basalt is an igneous rock which is extrusive in nature, these specimens formed over 60 million years ago during the Tertiary period and come from Ireland. They are part of the Antrim lava group and exhibit a dark colouration with occurrences of amygdales containing quartz and calcite crystals. As a basalt they are somewhat dense, but lighter than pure samples due to the cavities within them which formed as a result of gaseous activity during their ejection. Over time, hydrothermal fluids pass through the rock and minerals form within the cavities, which gives the usually dark coloured rock a speckled appearance. These samples are available in various sizes and are suitable for higher educational use to detail the subtle differences between similar igneous rocks, they come supplied in a card tray with an information label.

These specimens, along with most angelite, are from Lima, Peru and were collected near the Casapalca Mine at Casapalca, Huarochiri Province, Lima Department, Peru.

Anorthosite is a phaneritic, intrusive igneous rock characterized by a predominance of plagioclase feldspar (90–100%), and a minimal mafic component (0–10%) including Pyroxene, ilmenite, magnetite, and olivine. These thin sections exhibit a rock which has been deformed and as such the once large plagioclase crystals have recrystallized to form much smaller crystals.

Aragonite in sputnik form, exhibiting the excellent twinned crystal habit in which the crystals radiate outwards, similar in appearance to the famous Russian satellite ‘Sputnik’, hence the nickname. The crystals are a bright orange colour and when viewed from certain angles, the orthorhombic shape of the crystals can be seen. Aragonite is one of the two naturally occurring crystaliine forms of calcium carbonate, the other being calcite. It is formed by biological and physical processes, including precipitation of water from marine and freshwater environments. These aragonite “sputniks” were collected from Morocco and will come supplied in a labelled card tray.

Araneograptus murrayi fossil graptolite specimens which exhibit dendritic morphology. The samples are preserved within Fezouata shale deposits of lower Ordovician which is within the Drâa-Tafilalet region of Morocco and show the fan like structure this species had during life. A colonial animal, graptolites likely floated trough the ocean and filter fed, much similar to corals. The abundance of iron in the rock gives the shale and fossils a pale orange colouration. Graptolites themselves are important for geological dating as specific species can be used as zoning fossils to determine the age of strata, as such, these samples are not only suitable for enthusiasts but also educational use. Baryte mineral specimens collected form Somerset in the UK, exhibiting a bladed crystal habit or massive form, the dense specimens are an off white, yellow or brown colour due to staining from hematite (iron ore), available in various sizes, ideal for educational use.
Baryte (also spelt barite) is a widely occurring mineral consisting of barium sulphate, they can occur with many crystal habits, in this case, these mineral specimens exhibit the cockscomb mass form, in which randomly orientated blades of the mineral occur on a massive bed. These particular specimens are a pink or orange colour with a pink bed but other colours of baryte exists, including white, buff or brown. Any barite specimen is incredibly dense, with small pieces even feeling heavier than they appear, which is surprising, considering it is a non metallic mineral. This density was how the mineral obtained its name, being derived from the Greek word ‘βάρυζ’ meaning heavy. It occurs in a range of environments and deposited via many processes including biogenic, hydrothermal and evaporation, among others. Commonly occurring in lead-zinc veins hence some of the samples contain galena (lead sulphide) as well. Over 75% of baryte extracted worldwide is used for weighting driling fluids in oil and gas exploration to control high formation pressures and prevent blowouts. These mineral specimens were mined in Mibladen, Morocco, they are available in various sizes, each specimen is supplied in a labelled card tray.

Massive Biotite Mica specimens, collected from Arendal, Norway. These specimens depict a “massive” crystal structure, as opposed to the more commonly seen sheets. Like all biotite mica, these specimens are dark in colour, exhibiting a dark grey to black hue. Mica is one of the most common mineral groups, with biotite being the most abundant member. Biotite is very common in igneous and metamorphic rocks, with the dark minerals in granites, pegmatites and gneiss often being due in some part to the presence of this black mica. Biotite muscovite granite specimens from St. Austell in Cornwall, UK of Permian age is a coarse grained igneous rock composed of quartz, plagioclase feldspar, biotite and muscovite. The rock is part of the St. Austell pluton which formed 280 million years ago. An off white colour with gold and black flecks of micas, the rock has a unique chemistry and resulted in the rich mineralisation of ores in the area.
