Specimens of Pisolite, collected from Gloucestershire, UK. Pisolites are sedimentary rocks which consist of pisoliths – concretionary grains which resemble ooids, but always more than 2mm in diameter. These pisoliths often consist of calcium carbonate, but can sometimes of rarer minerals too. These grains are approximately spherical and have concentric layers which can reach reach 10 mm in diameter. These examples date to the Mid Jurassic (Aalenian: 177 – 180Ma). Portland Limestone £2.25 – £6.00 ex VAT
Portland Stone is a variation of limestone which formed during the Tithonian stage of the Jurassic period. It has been quarried since the 14th century, notably on the Isle of Portland, Dorset. This pale rock is sufficiently hard to resist weathering but yet soft enough to carve hence it makes an ideal architectural material. It was famously used for the construction of St. Pauls Cathedral and Buckingham Palace in London. Like most limestone, Portland stone formed in sub-tropical seas where wave action even resulted in the micro oolites visible in some pieces. Specimens are supplied in a labelled card tray.

Puddingstone is a variation of conglomerate, which is term used to describe a coarse grained sedimentary rock, featuring large, well rounded clasts in a finer grained matrix. It dates back to the Paleocene to Eocene period around 56 millions years ago. This particular rock is composed almost entirely of silica and has no porosity, likely contributing to its notorious hardness. This rare rock is only found in quantity at one locality in Hertfordshire. As such, it is becoming exceedingly difficult to obtain. Quartz Geode Fragments £1.50 – £6.00 ex VAT
Natural quartz geodes or nodules found in the Sahara desert, Morocco. These geodes are all lined with sparkling white minute quartz crystals which if set against a dark backdrop, shine brightly. Geodes form as bubbles of gas within magma (the term for lava when the molten rock is still underground). Because of the temperatures difference bwteen the magma and the pocket of gas, the crystals form slower, crystals which form slower tend to form in larger sizes and so with a geode, you have an outside which is made up of very fined grained crystals, too small to see and the inside, which is full of larger crystals. These geodes are slowly becoming harder to obtain as the collectors struggle to get to the site which is littered with old exposive mines from a previous war and when the geodes were stock-piled puff adders set – up home amongst them. These specimens are available in various sizes as geode fragments and come supplied in a card tray with information label.

Quartz is one of the most abundant and well known minerals in the world, and has an array of popular variations, such as rose quartz or amethyst. Standard quartz is colourless and clear/translucent and measures a 7 on Mohs scale of hardness. This superb quartz display specimen measures approximately 11 x 10 x 6 cm at its widest and longest points. It measures approximately 1200 grams, and is capable of standing freely. Rhodochrosite £1.50 – £2.25 ex VAT
Rhodochrosite is an eye catching pink mineral specimen and often highly sought after. The colouration is derived from manganese but gives a white streak. It forms in hydrothermal veins alongside other manganese minerals usually in low temperature ore deposits, the mineral was first found in the Silver mines of Romania, however, large deposits have since been found in Argentine, where it is also the countries national gemstone. These particular specimens also include banding and come from the Capillitas mine, 11,000 ft elevation. Catamarca, Argentina. The mineral itself takes a high polish, and the beautiful rose pink colouration and banding make it a much sought after mineral and gemstone. Gypsum is composed of calcium sulphate dihydrate CaSO4·2H2O . the name is derived from the Greek “Gypsos” meaning “chalk or plaster” It forms as an evaporite deposit associated with sedimentary rocks. Gypsum is deposited from lake & sea water but also from hot springs associated with volcanic activity. Pure gypsum is normally white but impurities give it a variety of hues.
